^ Practically you download the scrobbler which is this thing that saves whatever you listen to and puts it up on your profile. You've got a number of total plays, how many plays for each artist, top artists, etc. And you get to compare your charts with other members. It's awesome, join.

Is there a way to transfer plays from my iPod onto my Last.fm?

^ mine does that when i plug it into my computer. yours should too. it takes a few minutes, but it does it.

Hm, does my iPod need to be synced to my iTunes already? I never had them synced before and I don't want to now because my iPod has more plays than iTunes.

Your iPod no.. it doesn't HAVE to be.
but it adds all the iPod plays into the last.fm

yea, my ipod adds all the plays to LastFm as soon as you plug it in
