Squiers are kind only backed by Fender, so they take shape and most of the time sound of real Fenders. However, I prefer the feel of a real Fender to a Squier. I also think they sound a lot better - there's not as much squeaking on real Fender's as Squiers.
I can't really say what Squier basses feel like cos I've only played a Fender P-Bass.
Basically, your best bet for price is a Squier, but for quality it's a Fender :)

You could just buy a Squier brand and replace the pickups with better ones to make them sound better couldn't you?

I suppose so since in order to sell a guitar for a cheaper price, the materials you'd use to craft one would have to be cheaper in price as well.

The first guitar I ever wanted was an SG-style one. Not necessarily a Gibson... but if I were to get an SG it'd have to be Gibson. But man, the price for one of those things... wow!
