Just fiddle with it.

I looked at guys like nic, RJ, Icechicken (from pd) sigs and went off that. But don't rip-off peoples sigs. just the general idea. then just practice a lot.

just mess about with different styles and settings. it gets very easy after a while

Cutting out things is simple. In most cases. There is an icon called Lasso. You use that to draw around what you want, then use the move tool to move it around.
