The Official Non-Official Album Review Thread

Post by duck »

Ok, the point of this thread is simple. Feeling creative? Want to write about how good your favorite album is? Or how bad that new album from that band that used to be cool was? Write a review here. You can go song by song or just write something about the album in general. I'll post a few when I have time.

When Your Heart Stops Beating
2006 Interscope

Mark Hoppus - Bass, Vocals
Craig Fairbaugh - Guitar, Backing Vocals
Shane Gallagher - Guitar
Travis Barker - Drums

When I first picked up this album last November, the best way to describe my feelings was that I was shaking in excitement. It had been, after all, three years since the other two members of blink-182 released some new material. I read in interviews that it wasn't going to be "electronically tinged" like originally promised, and I was mildly dissapointed, but still very excited to take a listen.

So what did I think of the album? It was mostly good. It was fantastic to hear Mark's voice again, and he'd obviosuly taken it to the next level with this album. He simply sounds fantastic on this CD. The lyrics are his best yet, as well as his melodies. The bass is perfect. Travis Barker's drumming is excellent, even if it doesn't quite reach the level that he did in 2001's Take Off Your Pants And Jacket. Carol's vocals in Weatherman and Make You Smile were a wonderful touch, and Baby Come On was obviosuly one of the best songs of the year.

However, the album had one serious pitfall: the guitar work. Like... damn. The guitars in songs such as 155 are so brutally uncreative I wanted to stab myself in the ears. Even the guitar parts that seem ildly creative are actually quite complex. It was very dissapointed. I don't know if it was Hoppus who wrote these guitar parts before he had some real guitarists on board or what but it simply needs some work.

In short, Mark Hoppus' vocal and lyrical mastery saved thsi album from being a mess. For example, his fantastic melody on 155 simply salvaged that song and actually made it good.

3.5/5

Best Song: BABY COME ON
Worst Song: CLIFF DIVING

ps I'm going to rate blink-182 (untitled), BT2 and Black Parade tommorow! Everyone should get invovled and post some album reviews for stuff that we've never heard before, widen our musical boundaries, ya? Ya. Plus it's fun to write.
