Sum 41 - Underclass Hero Review
Green 182? Blink Day? Either way, it's copycat punk/pop.

It was an okay review. Haha, "Definately Download: Ma Poubelle"!
But I would have to agree that when I first heard the chorus of King of Contradiction live on YouTube, I could've sworn Green Day had a song with a similar melody.
But then again, bands in the same genre will tend to sound the same. That is why... they are in the same genre.

Walking Disaster sounds nothing like I miss you and Green Day could never write a song close to as good as The Jester or K.O.C

woah, theyre taking this "this-sounds-like-green-day" thing a little too far, dont you think?

Agreed!
Stupid review.
I don't have anything against Blink-182, i used to love them a lot before Sum and i actually found the Sums when i looked up for bands similar to Blink but Sum 41 are way more talented than Blink or Green Day and even though songs tend to sound similar (how not? as said, that's why they are in the same genre!), the sums are way more original, creative and talented than other bands in the genre.

I sadly agree with some parts of it.

Look, I like Sum 41 as much as the other people who post here, but even I'm not in denial about Sum 41's lack of originality on Underclass Hero. As a guitar player myself, (don't know how many others are on this site), I probably notice this easier than others do. I know that pop-punk/punk as a whole sounds somewhat similar, but in many cases, it goes BEYOND similar.
Underclass Hero - Sounds like blink-182's Dumpweed more than I'd like.
Walking Disaster - Not a ripoff of blink's "I miss you", but honestly sounds somewhat like a slower "March of the Dogs" (see below commentary).
Speak of the Devil - O.K, THIS one I can't see any obvious/immediate similarities with other songs.
Dear Father - Gosh, it's a freakin pop song I'd expect from Avril.
Count Your Last Blessings - Some parts sound like Deryck reorganized/rearranged "Hitchin' a Ride"...by Green Day
Ma Poubelle - This one doesn't count, obviously. It's a joke lounge song.
March of the Dogs - Listen to this and tell me it doesn't sound like blink-182.
The Jester - I can easily picture Billie Joe singing this one himself. Sounds like one of their REALLY early songs musically.
With Me - While I do think that this is maybe Sum's best song, I can name TOO many songs with a I-V-VI-IV progression in the key of E Major
Pull The Curtain - Blink-182's "Every time I Look for You", anyone? MCR as well? The outro also sounds like "We're All to Blame" and "88" (ok, those songs are Sum 41 songs, but seriously, did Deryck run out of ideas for an outro?)
King of Contradiction - Sounds eerily like Jaded, Take Back, In the End, I Don't Care...by Green Day
Best of Me - This one pretty much SCREAMS that Deryck had listened to "Wake Me Up When September Ends" about 5 minutes before he wrote the song.
Confusion and Frustration - Sonically, it sounds like a reject from blink-182's "Dude Ranch" album. Lyrically, it sounds like a NOFX's "War on Errorism" song.
So Long, Goodbye - This song is pretty much IS Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) with a "Scottish highland" flavor.
Don't get me wrong, I love the album, but seriously, Sum 41 has lacked originality from the get-go. Too many of their songs even rely on the I-V-VI-IV pattern, only difference is the starting note (ALL the UH b-sides use it). Don't think I'm over-analyzing it. Don't think I'm just trying to pick a fight. All I'm saying is that there are very obvious similarites that make these critics actually justified in commenting on the lack of originality. I myself, on the other hand, don't care so much who does it FIRST so much as who does it BEST, which sum 41 has done repeatedly (yay!)
Once again, I'm NOT trying to be a butt, I'm just trying to help you SAVE your butts if you get into an actual argument over this in real life.

i think the good thing is that (for me) i don't listen to green day, blink, nofx and all those bands you listed above. so i can't hear similarities so i couldn't give a shit to what any critic says about Sum 41.

I've given up on expecting well-written pop-punk reviews from professional critics. This probably isn't the worst of them, but it still represents what these kinds of people write that really ticks me off.
They're in the same musical genre. Of course they sound similar. I could take two metal bands and complain about how they sound too similar. But that's "cool" music, because it came first or something.
Seriously, these critics don't have the brainpower to see pop-punk as anything other than a trend, made by trendy people, who imitate other trendy people. As Deryck has stated before, it's a cop-out. They can't think of anything creative to say, so they beat the long-dead horse of, "It sounds like Green Day/blink-182".
I'll admit there are a few points where there are some significant similarities between said bands on the album, but by no means is it as "copied" as they say it is.

None of the songs on Underclass Hero sound like Green day/Blink to me.
At all.

^Same.
I, uh, REALLY think people are over-analyzing this album. ENTIRELY.

Likewise, dudes.
I think they should stop over-analysing this album and enjoy it as it is.
Even if Sum copied from Green Day or Blink-182, they did it better than those two bands!
Anyway, i started listening to Green Day's American Idiot few days ago and i can't find any similarities.
