iMessage problem

for whatever reason my iMessage stopped working all together today. I wasn't getting texts and I noticed that mine were no longer sending, so I turned off my iMessage for a little while and when I went to turn it back on, all it says is "waiting for activation"

Syncing it to my iTunes isn't an option because the casing on my laptop broke and it's going to be sent away somewhere and it'll take at least 2 weeks.
Neither is hard rebooting it for the reason above because I'll lose everything.

help?

I never had it hooked up under my email, it was just my phone number. But I did hook up my email a few minutes ago, But I turned iMessage off again and turned it on, turned off my phone. And now the option isn't even there.
Where am I supposed to sign out?

Something along the lines of:
settings> messages> Receive on> Apple ID> sign out

I went under Send & Receive, and my numbers there... but its faded out? and theres my email and theres a tick mark by it, so should I go into it, then say remove email and put it in again?
Clearly the problems with the fact my phone number is like gone

EDIT: idk what happened but its working now... after getting a message from Apple

Mine was messed up today too, I'd only receive texts and not iMessages from my girlfriend (who also has an iPhone) and it would take me forever to send one even with 5 bars on 3G, but it seems to have worked itself out now.

My twitter feed was filled with people complaining but I never had problem at all. I used it fairly heavily between 6pm to about 1am before heading to be. My best educated guess is heavy traffic on the server.

Is anyone having problems with iMessage? Mine stopped working some time yesterday and I've been sending texts ever since.

Have a look on this page if you want to check the status of iMessage/FaceTime.
