do you know any songs based on powerful stories ?
like this one by The Hollies with a really outstanding message
the story is :
It's based on an event at Boys Town, late one winter night, circa 1915.Father Flanagan answered the door to find a young boy toting his little brother, fast asleep, on his back. Flanagan took them in from the cold. He asked how far he had carried his brother, who looked to be heavy. The boy answered, "He ain't heavy, Father, he's my brother". A statue of the boys with that phrase inscribed now stands at the entrance of Boys Town in Omaha

there are differences between your stories and the story I posted, the one about the two boys is kind of a public story, whilst apart from the Sum 41 fans, nobody really gives a shit about Deryck's addiction or his divorce, or his father ...

Dave's story is the closest to the kind, but still, cancer, ufortunatelly, is a common disease nowadays and so not many people know about that story

but the one that inspired The Hollies' song is a story that your mother could tell you to evocate a certain kind of feelings in you, feelings of loving, peaceful family, or something like that ...

This song was about a massacre in some small town in Australia. Some psycho teacher or something killed a bunch of kids at a school.

Not sure why the songs feels kind of "upbeat". They obviously had a reason for it. The singer doesn't like to talk about the song for some reason.

Slightly off-topic but I do like to listen to a concept album now-and-again like The Emptiness by Alesana and The Story Of Kristy Killings by Snow White's Poison Bite (Not to sure if that one is a true concept album though).

Rush has a lot of narrative songs, but my favourite by far is Red Barchetta. The song has no lyrical chorus, instead in made up of verses and different types of bridges.
The song was inspired by the futuristic short story "A Nice Morning Drive", by Richard Foster and published in the November 1973 issue of Road and Track magazine. The story describes a similar future in which increasingly stringent safety regulations have forced cars to evolve into massive Modern Safety Vehicles (MSVs), capable of withstanding a 50-mile-per-hour impact without injury to the driver. Consequently, drivers of MSVs have become less safety-conscious and more aggressive, and "bouncing" (intentionally ramming) the older, smaller cars is a common sport among some.

You should check out the band Alkaline Trio, they have a ton of songs that are public story based, alot dealing with murders and death.

Donner Party- About the famous party of travelers who got lost and trapped in the snow so they resorted to cannibalism and ate each other.

Sadie- About Susie Atkins/Sadie Glutz and of Charlie Manson and all the killings.

Dead End Road- About the Laci Peterson murder in San Franciso, CA.

Also Dropkick Murphys have a bunch of irish "storytelling" songs. My favorite one being "The Fields of Athenry"-From Songmeanings.net "the many deaths involved with the potato famine in Ireland in the late 1840's was not a direct result of the famine. the exact same famine existed in America and England, as well as many other places. but no one died from those famines, only the Irish. there was plenty of food in Ireland at the time, but the English decided to capitalize on the lack of potatoes (ireland's most common crop) and use it to starve out the Irish. so the english bought all the corn and other meal that was being grown in Ireland and imported it to England, as well as refusing to allow other meal to be sent to Ireland. Trevelyan was a British minister at the time, and it was 'his' corn that was being exported from Ireland while the Irish starved. thus what happened in Ireland in the late 1840's was not really a famine, but a starvation, since a true famine can`t really exist when there is more than enough food about."

Boys Night Out created an entire album telling a story. A lot of bands do "story" albums. These are often called "concept" albums.

Brand New also wrote a song, titled "Limousine" about a little girl who died in a car accident after her parents' wedding. A drunk driver smashed into the limousine she was in, and she had actually been decapitated as a result of the car accident, I believe.

The Offsprings - Kristy are you doing okay.

And for Stan by Eminem, I'm pretty sure it's not a real story.

lol kristy are you doing okay is perhaps the worst song the offspring have ever recorded. and off course stan's not real, but it uses its fictional story as a perfect metaphor for how he had to handle fame at the time.

some good lyrical songs were posted, thx guys, I've just recently came acrossa song by one of the older rap artists, Immortal Technique, the song is called Dance With The Devil, and the story is good and disgusting at the same time, I mean, it's good he regrets his actions so much and it follows him every second of his life, but fuck, a man who rapes a woman should be tortured and after that, shot in the head ...

I mean, if the story of the song is not fictional and the singer really was one of the fuckers who did that to the woman, then fuck, die motherfucker die ...

and according to some interviews with him, he didn't exactly say that he did it, but he didn't also say that he didn't do it, but from what he said there I'd say he raped her too with the other bastards from the gang...
