AMERICAN IDIOT - The Movie

That's right! Earlier today, Green Day confirmed that their legendary 2004 rock album American Idiot would be adapted into a film courtesy of Universal, following the musical adaption's hugely successful Broadway run. Billie Joe Armstrong will be starring as St. Jimmy and the plot is expected to be fairly similar to that of the stage production. Tom Hanks, as well as the band themselves, is expected to personally produce the film. Michael Mayer, who directed the American Idiot musical, is set to return to direct the film. The film is set for a 2013 release, which (*crosses fingers*) could easily coincide or follow a new album release from the band).
I am the only one here who actually thinks this will work well? The Broadway show that everybody claimed would nosedive turned out into a massive hit with the critics and audience - and I think for this film it's all or nothing (preferably the former).

I can't wait to see Billie Joe acting. In the musical he was... well, phenomenal. The way he played St. Jimmy's role, huhh. Everyone should have seen it. AI story is great for movie but we'll see, it can be fucked up easily.

should be decent actually. unless it's full of singing, which it probably will be. not that it matters really, green day's alright.

btw : hasn't actually something like this been out there before ??? I'm pretty sure people were talking about an American Idiot musical here before, I think that someone even witnessed it live, maybe SamueeL, or someone, I just know that someone here was at some Green Day musical...

I think Samuel did see them, on the topic he said Billie Joe was awesome.
I'm quite pessimistic to be honest, I just read an article where they are talking about that movie as the second movie of that kind, the first being mama mia (it's what I think I read...). I never watched it, but I'll watch this movie for sure. All I want is just another record, thats what they do the best

Sounds interesting, I would probably watch it. I'm not sure on Billie Joe being St. Jimmy though, but I suppose he would know the character the best out of anyone, so he should do a decent job.

Yeah I saw AI musical with Billie Joe in it. And guys, he was the best one on the whole stage. And no, I'm not huge GD or Billie Joe fan. Guy just went fucking mental on stage :D Of course it's going to be different for him to perform in front of camera, since that guy really loves the audience but I think he'll do just fine. He has done couple of TV shows earlier and did good job.

part of me wants this to be good and for me to enjoy it, though another part of me wants this to become a hilarious Glee-esque pile of shit.
can't see the second part happening with Tom Hanks involved though!

Yeah, I saw it too in August. The story was surprisingly good. I didn't have high expectations about the plot, since the story in the album seems out of place (to me at least). But in the musical it worked very well.
I'm really looking forward to this, but like Sam said, this could be fucked up easily.

It would be cool if it was something like Sweeney Todd. There's one musical from recent memory that I really enjoyed.
