Right, so here it is-
My current laptop is completely fucked. It won't last more than a couple of months longer. So I thought of saving up to get a high-spec desktop. I'm about halfway there, and finding a job could help too. However, having a desktop next year means that I'd have to leave it Internet-less at my boarding house, and that I'd I'd be computer-less and Internet-less during holidays, which is a no-go. As much as I'd like to get another decent laptop, all the ones under £700 can't run iTunes and the ones over that break every week.
In short, I need:
A reliable system
Something portable I can work on
Internet
Something I can play games on
My options are:
A desktop
A small reliable laptop
A larger high-spec laptop
An iPad
Mobile Intermet
An Xbox
Any suggestions? I fucking hate technology, but nobody can survive without it and the worst part is these manufacturers know it.

Re: Tech Dilema
Well I've considered it a bit more and have come to the conclusion that while (I honestly can't believe I'm saying this) a MacBook would be very good, I don't think I have the money. However, windows laptops are generally pretty useless and so either I buy something crappy that will last a few months for £300 or I buy something that will last 2 years for £800. No idea where I could get that kind of money though... How could I raise £600 in 2 months? Getting an unskilled job in this place at 16 years old is next to impossible. My parents are unwilling to contribute anything, though I might be able to squeeze a wee bit out of them if I get straight As in my Highers. FUCK!!! WHY IS TECHNOLOGY SO STRESSFUL!!!

Re: Tech Dilema
Fuck mac, massive waste of money. I have one so I can be totally honest and say it's a waste of money.
I've heard good things about HP windows laptops. I haven't had a windows laptop in ages though. My sisters Dell seems to work fine but my mums HP is better. You should be able to get a decent windows laptop for the price you said.
If you're gonna get a desktop look out for computer markets/fairs and try get someone to make you one, or find a nerd on campus that will help you. My comp was only $700 australian like 3 years ago and it still plays new games at full graphics fine, starting to struggle the tiniest bit on the Witcher 2. I don't know anyone that buys desktops retail/brand name ones now, most people I know seem to just get one put together and it's way cheaper.
Also what did you mean by saying you'd have to leave a desktop internet-less at your boarding house?

Re: Tech Dilema
Funny you should say that. I actually had a look at the MacBooks and it appears they use 2009 tech for twice the price - I'm now interested in the HP Pavilion DV6. However the website I found it on doesn't specify which model, and all I know is that the one I'm looking at has an i3 (I'm not up-to-date; are those things still good?) and was ~ £500.Tyler. wrote:Fuck mac, massive waste of money. I mean it would have to stay there all year without the ability to use internet. But having settled on a laptop now, I think that's irrelevant.Tyler. wrote:Also what did you mean by saying you'd have to leave a desktop internet-less at your boarding house?
EDIT: I think it was the HP Pavilion DV6-3120sa.

:O Doesn't the boarding house have internets at all?
Well yeah I have heard bad things about Dell in general so I don't know whether you want to consider that, but I've never heard anything bad about HP. There's the real gaming laptop brands like Alienware but you're probably looking at way too higher prices then. If you have the ability to I recommend you go into the stores and talk to people that really know properly about laptops because I haven't used Windows ones enough, just make sure you remember they'll be trying to sell you something haha so listen to the facts and try rule out the BS, like if they're constantly making you look to the most expensive one there lol.
I agree with you about the windows not being complicated as well...never understood why people think that, or that Mac is easier. Whenever I'm on my laptop (mac) all the UI stuff just makes me facepalm, I don't understand the hype around it whatsoever.

Re: Tech Dilema
I got an HP HDX16 and it's a pretty good computer. I'd suggest you buying a mac... Mac laptops appear to me as being more "solid" than windows laptops (I don't own one but I know people who own one), and even if the specs seem lower than current PCs, the system is very well programmed, so it's faster than a PC. I run Mac on my laptop, and it's great, but I feel like it can break at anytime. I've seen a lot of people at uni taking notes with their macs, for me it's the way to go if you want a computer that you can always bring with you.

Re: Tech Dilema
HP laptops have terrible cooling. Which does tend to make them overheat a lot. Pretty much everyone i know with a HP laptop has had this issue.

I have a system76 laptop but you'd have to buy a Windows disk since they all have is Ubuntu pre-installed and Linux can't run iTunes. Good laptops though.

Re: Tech Dilema
I don't really need to worry about cooling. I had a Dell XPS with a broken fan- thus I just bought my own cooler stand. What matters for me is the raw power and long-term use (I use my computer a lot for multiple activities).
