i agree with Andrea. "America" can refer to either continent of North America, or South America, or both combined (THE AmericaS). but when referring to The United States of America, one should say as such. therefore, "The United States of America" starts with the letter "U".

actually, i think that the reason why it's called the americas might be a translation from 16th century spanish, you see when the spanish empire ruled the world, America was usually called Las indias(cos columbus thought he arrived to India) or Las Americas(after Amerigo Vespucci named the continent )
