Genre?

What genre do you consider Sum 41? I'm basing this thread off of a discussion I had about music with Charley last night. Keep away from the annoying "genre's suck blahblah" conversation. We already know it's unfair to classify music into one stupid genre... just try to do it. I would like to know your opinions on the genre(s) you consider this band.

The obvious answer would be pop-punk. But that only applies to HHOP and AKNF. They aren't metal, that's for sure and they're not punk. So i would say there a rock band with punk and metal influences. And i'm not a big fan of the whole pop-punk labeling either. Just because you have a catchy melody doesn't mean you're a pop artist. So i would say rock.

If I have to choose one genre, I'd also say rock, because their music changes on every album.
Genre(s) for each album:
- Half Hour of Power: punk rock, pop punk
- All Killer No Filler: pop punk, skate punk
- Does This Look Infected?: melodic hardcore, alternative rock
- Chuck: alternative metal, melodic hardcore
- Underclass Hero: pop punk, alternative rock

idk id consider them a alternative & punk (its a legit genre according to iTunes haha) group due to 3 albums really having the pop punk/punk rock and alternative sounds, but they definitely have punk and metal influences. due to their constant change with every album, you cant really consider them one genre though...
- HHOP: punk rock, alternative metal
- AKNF: pop punk, skate punk
- DTLI?: punk rock, alternative
- Chuck: alternative, alternative metal,
- UH: pop punk, alternative
-Scumfuck (Screaming Bloody Murder [yet to be released])- alternative (so far)

Alternative Punk Rock. That's how they say it themselves, and that's how I see it too.

Of course it varies from album to album, but if someone asks me what genre Sum 41 is, that would be my answer.

Haha I was thinking of making a topic like this too.

I'm going to do this with almost going song by song on the album.

HHOP = punk with shades of ska and pop.
AKNF = alternative rock, shades of rapcore (lmao) and pop.
DTLI? = alternative rock
Chuck = Nu Metal, hard rock, shades of thrash
UH = pop, alternative rock

All in all, i'd brand Sum 41 an Alternative Rock band.

It's so awkward when people say they are a punk band. They've never been punk! Well, not entirely punk. Maybe just some punk influences.
Luckily I didn't use punk in every sentence. : D

I just say they rock my sockz off.
And indeed we can say UH is the most pop of all. But I don't like that word pop

When I put in a Sum 41 cd (except for Underclass Hero) it comes up as Alternative & Punk. So I say Sum 41 is...

Alternative & Punk

I guess some kind of rock..? I'm really bad at things like this so 'some kind of rock (maybe?)' is the best answer anyone would ever get from me.

Btw I just remembered when someone on Omegle once said Sum 41 were emo after I'd said I liked them.

Rock.

They've got too much shit going on, but it all come under the umbrella of Rock, so that's what I'll say.

I say Rock as well since Deryck also considers his band to just be a "rock band".

I consider Sum 41 a genre of their own.

A rock band, and nothing more.
