Your Bird + Bee Stings review

Okay, so I managed to buy it from iTunes (My first itunes purchase!) and I'd like to hear your opinions. To be honest, I didn't like the first OP MD album that much, just few songs here and there. The second album is a lot better. I love the sound, tho it's very similar compared to first record in many ways, for example Cone doesn't sing that much leads, you can hear him more in backing vocals. But the time when Cone takes the lead, it's really refreshing. Though Cone really has good backing vocal voice. Cone is singing lead/part time lead in: Bird + Bee Stings, Calling All, Flashing Lights, My Fault Line, My Own Catastrophe. (Probably missed song or two) Mostly it's still Todd singing in those songs too.

Overall this album is more rocking with better songs than the previous one. Mostly vocal & guitar parts are really interesting to listen. Haven't listened enough to judge bass. Steve is doing good job too, some interesting drumming here and there. My highlights: Dead Doctors, Imaginary Friend, Bird + Bee Stings, Sick + Twisted, My Own Catastrophe.
If you don't wanna buy the whole album, at least buy 'My Own Catastrophe', song that Cone wrote and sang, it's kinda sum41-ish.

9/10
Worth of 9 bucks.

This reads like it could be my experience. I didn't like the first one that much either, although it had a couple of good songs like Sayonara, Chain Reaction or Photo Sexual.

If you're still interested, remind me to post a review here in about 2-3 weeks when had time to listen to the new one for a while (going to buy it tomorrow or in the next few days), because I always forget about stuff like this.

Edit: I'm listening to it right now. Is it just me or is Todd really singing that bad?

kept forgetting to do this

I actually think I liked Cone's voice better in WHAE, but I do like that he sings more. The one thing that always falls short for me with OpMd is the lyrics, they're good, but not great

1. "Dead Doctors" - its a nice intro, better than WHAE
2. "Imaginary Friend" - this one is just a fun song, great upbeat melody
3. "Buried at Sea" - best bass, nice bridge solo
4. "Birds + Bee Stings" - eh, not great, maybe it will grow on me, just don't like the "static beat"
5. "Calling All" - great guitar, love the "babadabas", not a fan of the bridge (talking)
6. "Sick & Twisted" - favorite on the album, I like the tempo and melody. I'm a sucker for acoustic
7. "Flashing Lights" - the whistle makes it fun, good beat, really like the bridge
8. "I've Been Drinking" - thinking this was todd's idea, not a fan on high guy vocals and not a fan of the talking at the end, plus I'm a girl so I can't relate to the lyrics..lol
9. "Fault Line" - like the lead guitar melody
10. "My Own Catastrophe" - like the rhythm guitar tone, best drums, nice tubular bells, wish Cone had sang the whole thing.
11. "Lock Box" - good beat and rhythm

so my faves: Sick and Twisted, My Own Catastrophe, Imaginary Friend, Buried At Sea

I have to agree with you about the favorite songs, those 4 are my favs off the album too. I also like I've Been Drinking a lot, but except those 5, all the other songs are kinda bland and not too interesting. The album is way too short too... only 11 songs, for about half hour, they could've added at least two more songs, have it for like 40 mins.

I like the fact that Cone's singing, I just don't like the sound of it on the OpMD albums.

It sounds really... I don't know... Ironic, mechanic, you know? Not real enough.

Yeaaah, mechanic, that's the word. It's not spontaneous enough.

Really? I find his voice relaxing to listen to, the other singer annoys me (ish). They need more Cone.

I don't even know why they make it sound that way.

After a lot more listenings, I really do think he has the potential to do it without all the 'edited' stuff.
