How positive are you that they don't like you? If you talked to them about it, then did you get a chance to ask why? Maybe you give off a certain impression that either puts them off because they think you're not interested (happened to me, I liked my best friend for two years and he never even noticed, even though I honestly thought I was being out there about my feelings) or maybe you give some vibe that just puts them off. How about asking them about their preferences in men and see where that goes, if you feel comfortable to talk about that stuff.
For the long distance, you can't really do much. Talk to her and keep saying nice things and make sure she notices that you're trying and that you like her and if she tells you to stop then you know it wont work but until she says something, you might have a chance. Maybe she doesn't know how to talk to you about it. Maybe hint on stuff like how much you'd like to visit her, the stuff you could do together, ask her to come over... etc...
Same goes for the other girl, though since you can hang out with her, why not ask her to go somewhere and hang out more one on one and express that you had a great time and you really enjoy spending time with her and so on... Though if your positive that they don't like you then from a girls point of view doing anything probably wont change how they feel. And if you feel comfortable, maybe ask them what you can do to make it work between each other. Also make your mind up which girl you really want, it makes it easier knowing which one to pursue as you can dedicate all of yourself to her without the 'what ifs' about the other girl.

One of two things could have happened:
1. He got the girls, and decided he was too cool for this place.
2. He didn't get the girls, and committed suicide.
Considering how desperate he was, I'm going to guess he didn't get either of the girls. The real question is how he committed suicide, I'm thinking he accomplished this by eating a tub full of beans. Anyone else care to share how they think this dude killed himself? Be creative!
