Top Albums 2010 Version.

Post by Childish Gambino »

I know we've had this topic at least 20 times, but, I don't know about you all, but my answers have certainly changed over the past year or so. So, TNS, what are you top 15 albums of all time? They could be albums that have had an influence on your life, or just albums that you can never get enough of. You can give a little explanation after each one if you'd like to.

Mine would be:

15. Kid CuDi - Man On The Moon.
Everyone's life changed the day they first heard Kid CuDi.

14. Third Eye Blind - Third Eye Blind.
Whether you want to admit it or not, you all rocked out to this CD at one point or another in your life. Jumper is pure gold, it's a shame they couldn't keep their shit together after this CD.

13. Armor For Sleep - Dream to Make Believe.
Armor got progressively worse as they went along, as it was way too hard to put out anything as good as Dream To Make Believe.

12. Blink 182 - Blink 182.
As I've gotten older, I've started to prefer this album to all of Blink's other albums. It's got the most maturity, structure, and feeling. Great all around CD.

11. Brand New - Deja Entendu.
Loved this album ever since I was 10, no need for any more explanation.

10. Mayday Parade - A Lesson in Romantics.
Miserable at Best is one of my all time favorite songs. Such a great CD.

09. Brand New - The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me.
Amazing album, completely shat all over Daisy, unfortunately.

08. A Love Like Pi - The Atlas and the Oyster.
Innocent Man, All You Do With Guilt, Iscariot, A Love Like Pi amazed me with this debut.

07. A Day To Remember - Homesick.
Oh my God, what an amazing album. The beginning of Downfall of Us All still gives me chills that last all the way until If It Means A Lot To You.

06. I See Stars - 3D.
A group of teenagers managed to produce one of the greatest post-hardcore albums I've ever listened to.

05. Say Anything - Say Anything.
Max Bemis only gets better with age, gotta love him. He made his catchiest, yet most meaningful CD all in one.

04. Jimmy Eat World - Clarity/Chase This Light.
Two outstanding albums, there's no other explanation needed.

03. MGMT - Oracular Spectacular.
Time To Pretend, Kids, Electric Feel, The Youth. Such a phenomenal CD, it's such a shame that Congratulations was a total bust :/

02. Houston Calls - A Collection of Short Stories.
My favorite powerpop album of all time, they have been my favorite band for awhile now. Miss them :/

01. Jack's Mannequin - Everything in Transit.
Andrew McMahon is one of the most inspiring stories in music. The first time I heard this album was one of the greatest days of my life.

Honorable mention:
Ratatat - Classics.
Coheed and Cambria - In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth III.
Just Surrender - If These Streets Could Talk.
The Postal Service - Give Up.
Senses Fail - Let it Enfold You.
Biggie - Ready To Die.
Lil Wayne - Tha Carter III.
Saosin - Saosin.
Sam Adams - Boston's Boy.
Shwayze - Shwayze.
3OH!3 - Want.

I could never do this.

I have too many albums and too many artists i love. My top 15 would have to have 60 more albums tacked onto it and I'd still be forgetting a few. I cant pinpoint it, but, i will list a few bands I ALWAYS comeback to, no matter if i get sick of them for a few months, these are bands I can always comeback to late some night and remember how much I love them. Some might get made fun of, as for those of you who feel the need to, its too bad you cant enjoy music like some of us. :P

(really in no order just putting them as i think of them)
blink 182
sum 41
yellowcard
good charlotte (I've got to be honest though, as I'm getting older im less and less into this band and Simple Plan, but they are still two of my foundation bands)
simple plan
bullet for my valentine
Breaking Benjamin
New Found Glory
Angels & Airwaves
The All-American Rejects
Brand New
Taking Back Sunday ( I haven't been into them as long as I have the others, but they still amaze me)
Oasis
Jacks Mannequin
Fall Out Boy
Jimmy Eat World
Maroon 5

Like I said I cant just narrow it down to a few albums, for another reason my favorite albums are constantly changing. I know you have those albums that you ALWAYS love but I don't really. now i have some SONGS from certain albums I always love. With these bands I like the albums and LOVE some of the songs. Basically I myself cant judge by the album because i might not like all of that album, but by the band, because collectively, i love their music.

I'll give this a shot, though I don't know many albums that have had an affect on my life. At least, none that have made me consciously think, "Wow, this album has changed me." Most of these are just albums I've just loved listening to.
  • 15. Eminem - The Eminem Show
Literally the first album I ever listened to through and through. Growing up in a time of pop acts like N'Sync, Britney and the Backstreet Boys, I never really got into music until I was 13 or 14. When I did, it was with this album. Eminem is probably the only rapper I've ever listened to and probably the only one I ever will. I've listened to Jay-Z's new album, but I just can't get into it. I hardly listen to The Eminem Show nowdays though.
  • 14. Sum 41 - Does This Look Infected?
In this album I got a taste of music that filled the void that I had during the 90's while I rocked out to "It's Gonna Be Me" by N'Sync. The song that got me hooked was Hyper-Insomnia-Para-Condrioid. The energy, aggression and edge from this album was what drew me to it. This was was album that made me want to learn guitar. I've listened to these songs so much in the past that they've actually gotten boring now (exceptions to Over My Head).
  • 13. Rise Against - Siren Song of the Counter Culture
My high school anthems. When I listen to these songs, I'm brought back to the wonderful memories of my high school. I really only listen to this album now if I want to take a trip down memory lane.
  • 12. The Hives - Veni Vidi Vicious
I actually have to thank Foxboro Hot Tubs for helping me discover the sound of garage rock. Without that band, I never would have listened to The Hives as fast as I did. This is another album I've listened to quite a bit. Great energy.
  • 11. +44 - When Your Heart Stops Beating
The songs of Summer 2009. I've listened to this song front to back probably 40 to 50 times in July and August on iTunes, my iPod and my car. I never realized how much I liked these songs. Somehow they just fit the theme of that time in my life and I can't ever listen to this album unless it's sunny outside or at least some resemblance of Summer.
  • 10. Box Car Racer - Box Car Racer
This album helped me look at Tom more seriously as a songwriter and it has some of my favorite songs that he's ever written. There's just a darkness to this album that I love and I would choose this over any of the current Blink-182 albums. Although, I really like the self-titled one.
  • 9. Jack's Mannequin - Everything In Transit
Not much to say about it. Every song is amazing (Holiday from Real is my favorite). I usually just break this album out during the Summer months because it's the perfect Summer album.
  • 8. AFI - Sing the Sorrow
I don't care what anyone says, I love the songs on this album. I can't understand 80% of the words Davy is singing, but I still enjoy the songs.
  • 7. Pixies - Doolittle
I don't know, I just love the music. I fell in love when I first heard "Where Is My Mind?" on the movie Fight Club although that song isn't on this album. However I think it has a better collection of songs than Surfer Rosa. Debaser and Mr. Grieves are my favorites.
  • 6. Muse - Absolution
I first listened to a Muse song when I was 15. I can't remember the song, but it was the most epic thing I had heard. When I got Absolution and listened to "Time Is Running Out" I got that same feeling and it was just breath of fresh air. Muse is a great band and I was really pleased when that new Sum 41 clip kind of reminded me of them.
  • 5. Weezer - Blue Album
It's really the only Weezer album I listen to on a regular basis. Again, songs that remind me of Summer.
  • 4. The Gaslight Anthem - Sink or Swim
Full of great songs I enjoy. That's all I can say.
  • 3. Nirvana - Nevermind
It is said to be an overhyped, overrated album, but it doesn't change the fact that I still find all the songs enjoyable. Nevermind showed me that songs don't need to have incredible guitar parts or anything complicated in it for people to like the music. It just had to be melodic. Kurt was a great songwriter in his own right and managed to make hits out of simplicity.
  • 2. The Gaslight Anthem - The '59 Sound
No surprise here. The band really refined their sound since Sink or Swim, which is an album I really enjoy as well. When I listen to this album, at first it's like, "Okay, I'll listen to my favorite songs first," but as soon as the track ends and the next one begins it's like, "Okay, maybe after this song." Every song is listenable and like my #1 album, it just has this uplifting feel to it.
  • 1. Frank Turner - Love, Ire & Song
I'm a sucker for Summer albums and this is another one of those. All the songs are just uplifting and energetic. I find this album more enjoyable than Poetry of the Deed. Whenever I listen to this album I'm always left happy at the end of each song.
If anyone actually took the time to read through that, you'll probably notice a pattern in that I really enjoy albums great for the Summer. I really don't think these albums have changed much since last year and I doubt they'll change for a while since these albums pinpoint major events in my life rather than my current situation (hence "all-time" right?). Over half this list is compiled of albums I hardly ever listen to anymore.

QuickEdit: My honorable mentions:

Blink-182 - Blink-182/Self-titled
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
Brand New - The Devil & God Are Raging Inside Me
Frank Turner - Poetry of the Deed
The Strokes - Is This It?
Skillet - Collide

my top three, for sure.

1. The Gaslight Anthem "The 59 Sound"
absolutely love every song on this CD, they're all perfect. and i have you guys to thank for introducing me to them. Thanks!

2. Rise Against "Siren Song for the Counter Culture"
i was actually in love with their next album, "The Sufferer and the Witness" when i heard this one. it took a few months actually, for me to listen to this album more and more. now i love 98% of these songs, and only about 60% on "Sufferer".

3. Billy Talent "II"
My favorite band. Saw them live a few weeks ago and they were absolutely amazing. When this album came out in the summer of 2006, I couldn't stop playing it. As the next few years went on, I stopped listening but after the concert, I really started to listen to them more and realized how awesome they are. I'm also trying to learn them on guitar/bass, but they're slightly tricky.

Honorable mentions (this means I'm too lazy to number these)

Alexisonfire "Crisis"
-the best Alexis album, in my opinion. Only because whoever did the mixing/mastering did an awesome job, all the songs are crisp and clear and beastly.

Jacks Mannequin "Everything In Transit"
-Another one you guys introduced me to. As Jeremy said, a really feel-good-summer album

Sum 41 "All Killer No Filler"
-Maybe im only putting this one on there because its a uplifting pop-punk album and thats the kind of mood im in right now, i dunno.

Other Bands:
-just some bands that have put out really good albums, but naturally have a few flaws-

Rush
-i can't name an album that is my favourite, because they have had many albums and have changed their style over the years. "Snakes and Arrows" is a big, crunchy sounding album but im afraid it doesn't have the lasting power of Moving Pictures. if i could pick all my favourite Rush songs and but them on my own greatest hits, that'd be my favourite album, though it'd might have to be a double album.

Against Me
-have really really good songs, but the best way to experience them is live. I did that a few weeks ago and songs that i don't really like on the albums (Pints of Guinness, and Don't lose Touch), just because the sound isn't as good as it could be, sound a hell of a lot better live. if they re-did all their earlier songs (i know they won't) they'd sound massive.

Anti-Flag
- Ah yes, Anti-flag, the band that I didn't like at first because the vocals were too whiny. fucking love them now, and they're great people too. i have lots of respect for these guys.

Angels and Airwaves
- I was kinda embarrassed to admit i listen to these guys at first cause there was a big love/hate fest (and there still is) about them, but thats over now. I love the spacey, ambient sounds of their songs, not sure if they'd be any good live though.

Switchfoot
-a more of a pop-rock band, but they do what they love and hell do they do it good.

Three Days Grace
-i can't really relate to many of their songs, but they put on a really good show when i saw them and they're one of the bands that kinda got me into a heavier sound.

right, this is gonna be a tough one, but here we go!

15 - Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American
the album that got me into JEW, such an awesome album. so many great, upbeat anthems on this album. it makes me happy and feel good everytime I listen to it

14 - Weezer - Blue Album
by far their best album in my eyes. another labum that takes me back to my youth

13 - Blink 182 - Take Off Your Pants & Jacket
this is just such a great summer, feel good album. so many great sing-along anthems and this album holds so many memories for me

12 - Brand New - The Devil & God Are Raging Inside Me
incredible album, another album I spent way too long listening to when it came out.

11 - Biffy Clyro - Infinity Land
closely loses ouot as my favourite Biffy album, this record really shows how dynamic and fantastic Biffy Clyro really are. this is the music that made me fall in love with Biffy, I just wish the new stuff could move me the same way like their previous efforts did!

10 - Biffy Clyro - Blackened Sky
it was a tough call, but this made it as my favourite Biffy album. more poppy then the next 2 albums, but it's done in such a dark yet beautiful way. another "high school album" of mine

9 - Frank Turner - Love, Ire & Song
this man can do no wrong and this album represents some of his best work. so, so, so many great sing-along tunes, this album just makes you feel good and want to get up and dance! I just love his voice!

8 - Boxcar Racer - Boxcar Racer
fantastic album, I just wish there were more! this is some of Tom's best work in my opinion

7 - Blink 182 - Dude Ranch
another great Blink album full with happy, feel good songs. this has a more raw feel to it than the albums that came after this and I think that's why I love it so much. plus, Josie is one of the best songs they have ever made.

6 - Brand New - Deja Entendu
the album that made me fall in love with Brand New, and still my favourite BN album. so many great songs on this album and everytime I listen to it it takes me back to my days in High School

5 - Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlanticism
I discovered Death Cab through The OC back in 2004 when I was obsessed with it, and I always used to hear Seth Cohen mention them, so I downloaded a few songs off limewire and instantly fell in love. it was like nothing i'd heard before. this band helped changed the music I listened to and I've discovered so many great bands/artists because of Death Cab (and also The OC/Seth Cohen for that matter!)

4 - Metallica - Master Of Puppets
not only favourite Metallica album, but also my favourite "metal" album ever. this album is amazing, from start to finish. every song is a belter. this is the album that made me fall in love with Metallica and it was always have a place in my heart.

3 - Jimmy Eat World - Clarity
My favourite JEW album, and 3rd fav of all time. for me, this album represents JEW at their best at a time when "emo" wasn't about fringes and MCR. the lyrics are amazing, and the album still feels so raw and heartfelt from start to finish. incredible album.

2 - The Gaslight Anthem - Sink Or Swim
this album has fast become one of my favourite albums of all time. I just love everything about this album. the lyrics, the guitars, Brian's voice, the stories. this album album also opened me up to a whole new world of music, and I will be forever greatful for that.

1 - Blink 182 - Untitled
my favourite album of all time, not just for the music, but for what this album represents in my life. this album came out at a time where I just "liked" music. I wasn't a huge fan of anything inparticular, I just liked various songs/bands/rappers that were in the chart. then I was given this by my Dad as a present as he knew I liked some of their older albums, and it changed everything. this album not only made me fall in love with Blink, but made me fall in love with music in general. I dscovered so many new bands because of Blink, and I also changed as a person. I made so many new friends through music and it really did change my life. I maybe wouldn't be here today on this site if it wasn't for Blink (gutted for you lot!). this album will always have that special place in my heart and it will always be my number 1.

other notable mentions:
Eels - Beautiful Freak
Refused - The Shape Of Punk To Come
Million Dead - A Song To Ruin
Ben Folds - Songs For Silverman
Yellowcard - Ocean Avenue
Sum 41 - Chuck
Sum 41 - All Killer, No Filler
Paramore - All We Know Is Falling

I don't like Guns N' Roses I have to admit. I'm still working on mine, it's taking longer and much harder than I though.
