I would tidy up your PC. Have you checked for viruses? Scan your drives first and then do some disk clean up and defrag, even the external ones. Also what I think might be an issue is BIOS. Perhaps your BIOS cannot take as much memory that you're connecting to it. Check if there are any updates on the website of the manufacturer.
What's your memory like btw?

It's very rare for the BIOS to have an issue with the memory since that usually an issues with the operating operating system using the wrong type of architecture as a 32-bit OS can only read about 3.5GB of memory. It also can't be a memory problem since moving files has absolutely nothing do to with memory and uses it's own type of called DMA which bypasses the memory chips.

The few issues that come to my head is that your CPU is slow and sluggish. I can't really say for sure as you haven't really given any details like how many/size of the files your moving and computer specs would also come in handy along with your operating system.

Right, have you tried using the HDD on someone elses computer. You should try it before doing anything else because it could actually be a problem with the HDD itself or the USB cable that connects it. Again, what OS are you using and if it's Vista what service pack do you have installed?

I know there was a bug in Vista when it was released that would transfer big files to external devices very slowly.

Screenshot time:

Press "Windows Key" + "R" at the same time.

In the dialog box type "winver".

Post the screenshot. ("Alt" + "PRT SC" in case you dunno how to screenshot)
