... Was pretty good at guitar in his early days. I never listened to the really old stuff much, but this video changed my perspective of the guy being a powerchord whore (not that he still isn't or never was). I'm probably late on this, but whatever. I'll help educate the youngin's.
Here he plays a lil' Eruption!

A lot of people who only play power chords nowdays can play pretty complicated stuff. Like Tom DeLonge, he may not be the best guitarist but he can definatly do better than he has done his last five records.

the thing you have to remember is the kind of band there in. face shredding solo's and riffs don't work in pop-punk bands. pop-punk is a simple, catchy, poppier and more accessible form of punk. your band doesn't have to show your full musical capabilities.
and I'm sure bands like Green Day and Blink don't care anyway, they have made enough moeny from being "shit musicians"

.... or maybe they spend their time working on more than just the guitar

Except the bass and drums in pop punk aren't that complicated either.

I don't think anything is really complicated when it comes to pop-punk anyway. As soon as it does, the band gets labeled a different genre like... Alternative! Or... Rock!

and to be fair, Billie has to song as well, he's not gonna write complicated guitar parts for him to play when he has to song at the same time. the easier the guitar playing, the more focus he can put into the singing, reacting with the crowd and just generally rocking out.

Um, Jason White is playing the lead for the most time anyways, so it would'nt be anything away from the "rocking out". Just like Dave did / Tom does in Sum 41.
