Phrase Question

i'm sure you've all heard the phrase "that would be the death of me first."
what does it mean though? i dont mean to sound stupid or anything, but i just cant seem to be able to figure it out. if someone could help me out, i'd appreciate it. thanks.

I'd rather die than
or
I'll be dead before that happens

I've heard that but with out the "first". It means that whatever you're refering to will take so much out of you if you do it, you'll "die".
