I love the Sum 41-ballads.

I think With Me and Best Of Me were pretty good songs, just like Pieces was.

Those songs, being released as single (except for BOM), represented the album totally, imo.

UH was kinda poppy, so With Me did really fit in there.

I don't think it attracts the wrong people. It's like showing they're more than just Fat Lip or other swearing-songs. In my opinion, it's a good thing they release those songs as singles. But, of course, not all of them.

It's about attracting people, not attracting the wrong people. The more their singles get played on the radio, the better.

I like that thought! The slow singles possibly represent the album. With Me, for example.. Even though most songs might be a little face paced, this song tells me the album is about Deryck, and his life. Well, mostly.

The fact is, the singles determine how much the album is gonna sell. Any 4-single album sells loads, or is a favorite by many. Such as "Chuck".

I don't think Sum41 does that...look at Handle This, Slipping Away, Pieces, Best of Me...they do "ballads" well

I think D's had a first single in mind for a while, and I get the feeling it won't be a ballad

Allthoug I don't see Handle This as a ballad, I agree on this one.

The piano played in Studio Update 8 sounds like it would be a ballad and hopefully it will be because that is one sad sounding piano line. But I really like it.

Maybe it's an introduction track.

Like the one Pennywise did that was 13 minutes long?

I'd like something along the lines of Jimmy Eat World's 23. That's one of the best songs i've ever heard.

I don't think there will be any long songs on it. I think Deryck doesn't like really long songs.

I guess -if there will be an intro on this record- that it'll be the one we heard in the very very very first update on the demo-phase.

The EP became an album.

Always was recorded after they finished touring in 2008, and probably was written during and after the tour.

Lars:

I kinda think that Deryck likes long songs. Greig Nori wanted that every song is 2:30-3:00 min long so that might have pissed D. UH includes longest songs they have ever written and overall UH songs are a lot more lengthier than songs on their other albums. But I can't know ofc.. :D

peacock41:

Always was originally written for EP. But it was released in compilation album 'cause they probably wanted to put out new song and it didn't fit other material. Sums idea was record EP to bridge the gap between albums because Deryck knew it would take a while to get a new record out. But when EP was done and he listened to the whole thing he felt it was too good to just be an EP, and thought that if he kept writing, maybe he could have an album done sooner than he thought.

That's for sure, no doubt about that.

But someone mentioned a 10 min-song here, that's what I call a long song. That must be a sort of Jesus Of Suburbia-thing. Don't get me wrong: I'll probably love it if they did something like that, but I don't think they will.

Yeah, I mentioned it and I totally agree with you, Deryck most likely didn't write that long song with many different sections. But song like that would totally rock.

The only song that did have some different sections or some different styles was Pull The Curtain, imo. Or maybe you can count Walking Disaster in as well.

But I liked those songs, they didn't seem this long just because of those different sections.

Everytime I listen to Jesus Of Suburbia, it's hard to realize that this song is over 9 minutes.
