Um... generally when a band says that they're going to be "thinking about a new album", that means that they'll be brainstorming and writing. And given the fact they've already been writing new material on the road, I don't doubt that they'll be making a new album.

I think they're realizing that they're in a place where they're a band that can't afford to lose any momentum. Fans disappear when they stop for 4 months.

Last time they took a year off before they even thought about writing. And what happened? They lost a member and a manager. Their new album was a flop and didn't birth even one hit. "With Me" came close but it suffered from what seems to be the typical bad promotion that Sum 41 gets nowadays.

If they're smart they will get a much more hard-hitting album out within 2009 and go with their gut instead of the trends both when they're writing and when they release the first single. They'll come up with a much better album title and they won't give the journalists a big glaring hole to criticize.

And Deryck needs to realize that holding back Cone as well as his own guitar skills is getting him absolutely nowhere.

totally agree with all that, and if they do do what Phili just suggested, then the next album will hopefully be an awesome album

Yeah, it seemed like Underclass Hero was a desperate attempt at making a hit-album.

I believe the defining factor of the band's future is whether or not the band gets a new guitarist to replace Dave. I know they said they wouldn't, but Deryck said it himself, he doesn't consider himself a guitarist. If he doesn't believe himself to be a guitarist, nor a very good one, then he'll have no drive to become better than what he is right now. I remember an interview where Deryck was talking about Dave trying to teach him some shredding, but Deryck had no interest in it.

Just in case ANYONE was doubting Rick, I asked Cone what was going on (before I read this), and he said that they're taking a break before (and here's the key part) beginning to write the new album. Not thinking about it, they will indeed be writing for a new album.

He also said that The Operation M.D. will be recording over the next few months.

^ good to hear all that! new Operation M.D. til end of the year, I hope! and we may even see a new Sum 41 album next year!

Hopefully they discuss their musical direction during this break. And hopefully it turns out as something more original.

Of course they will make a new album and this time Dave will be a part of it.
Well, thats just my dreams. Hopefully one of this two things will become true.

I think what Sum 41 means is their sitting down and jamming and coming up with stuff on the spot, not like being all intense about recording a new album.
