but, it was definitely more metal sounding than jesus of suburbia. darker than jesus of suburbia.
do you know the breakdown of 88? da-da-da-da da-da-da-da da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da where stevo plays the snare drum, sounding like a machine gun? they did that for a while in the middle.
there were no individual instrument solos. i didn't even hear a guitar solo... i hope it's cause tom didn't play it and just played the rhythm. but there were many cool riffs. including one that was pull the curtain esque, where they were emphasising the off beat or the "and". they also seemed to copy/adapt the syncopated refrain of metallica's battery. da da-da-da da-da (snare crash-crash-crash snare-crash) only did it once though.
there were definitely more feel changes than jesus of suburbia. i just loved it when the song was in 6/8... way more complex than with me was, in that respect. and i think it had a cooler build up. an excellent crescendo which led into a guitar riff for 4 bars or so, then cone and stevo came back in with a bang. just imagine all the feels sum 41 have done: motivation intro, still waiting main riff, in too deep verse, pieces chorus, 88 breakdown, no brains bridge (there seemed to be many bridges), we're all to blame chorus (but on crashes instead of ride), ... and string all that together, but sounding much more progressive than these songs do!
i bet it will be better than jesus of suburbia.
Oh shizzle... Now I really want to hear this song.

it's because i was the only one down there. cone told me himself that it was the first time they played the stuff live since the studio. most people in other cities (assuming they are still soundchecking with these songs, and it isn't spontaneous) might just think they're just jamming, so nothing special? only fans that follow them would know there's a 12 minute long song, and so on.

Yeah you have a point. I just talked to Matt about it too. He said they just played them "casually". After hearing the great words you said about them, I think I'll jizz my pants once I see them playing the songs with full energy behind em.

during the 12 minute song, i kept looking at my watch, kinda timing it and being like... omg... is it it? is it it?
i wish i could talk about the other 2 songs i heard in more detail. but i guess they sounded more like the average, metal/punk sum 41 songs, so the 12 minute one is the one that stood out to me.
i'm very glad they're releasing it soonest!

I love them being able to play the whole record live.
I mean, on each album there are a few songs that don't show up in setlists.
UH had Best of Me, on Chuck there was Open Your Eyes, DTLI had Billy Spleen, I think there were more, but anyway; those were all good songs imo.
I know playing them as a soundcheck doesn't necessarily mean they'll be in the actualy playlist, but there's at least a chance.

I'm not correcting you or anything I just feel like listing what songs were never played live.
DTLI - Billy Spleen, shows how epic that record is that only one song was never played live
Chuck - The Bitter End was played once and I only think it was for some tv show performance that's it. Open Your Eyes was never played live although I love that song and I'm pretty sure I'm Not the One was never played live but I also love that song. Not sure if Slipping Away was ever played but I'm pretty sure it wasn't either. 88 I think was played fully once for the Go Chuck Yourself CD/would've been DVD recording, but they should play it fully...it is one of if not the best song on that record. But they do play the little end fast part a lot though which is awesome.
UH - Don't care enough about this record to list what they haven't played

Slipping Away was performed at an award show after Pieces, with strings and everything. And The Bitter End is on Go Chuck Yourself, so they played it live. Not sure how much they played the whole 88
