So far, from what I've read, a lot of people hate or at least are severely disappointed with the guitars on UH. Which, i suppose i can understand. Guitars have never really popped out at me, besides like The Bitter End or In Too Deep, I've always been more absorbed into the lyrics, melody, and flow of their albums. The only thing i see on the actual instrumental side of things. Is that whatever UH misses in guitars, makes up for it in other, new instruments. The deafening, pounding of the keyboard in CYLB, the fade in vocals and layering guitars in SPOTD, the heavier-acoustic themed songs, and of course the screams and wails of the guitars and voices constantly being wrapped around your headphones, with advanced fades and intros that have until now never been as top-notch. So, maybe in the traditional mentality of the guitar UH is missing something, but i wouldn't trade wailing 30 second solos for the professional work and effort Deryck put in this album.

Yeah, I can understand what you mean because I see it that way too. There is a lot more effort put into the craft of these songs. I, myself, didn't really notice instraments in songs until Still Waiting and Over My Head. It was mainly about the melody to me, which is probably why I avoided rap and didn't like Sum 41 initially.

I also don't think Sum 41 needs wailing solos to make great songs. No Reason is my favorite Sum 41 song and it has no solo. Basically when I said "more guitar" I guess I meant variation. I know the album is supposed to have one main theme from track one to fourteen, but I personally don't think the songs all have to be similar in some way to portray that. Because then it's the music that's similar as well, not just the theme and some reviews of Underclass Hero criticize that part of the album.

Yeah definitely.
Plus a theme doesn't means it has to sound the same or follow the same melody exactly.
I mean, it's not a concept album, first of all, and even concept albums who are obviously based on some concept still variate a lot and dont have to be like a long story with verses from tracks 1 to 14 for example.

no album should follow the exact same chord progression or melody in every song.

i would love to have them make a All Killer No Filler 2, the bonus track on UH are awesome, it would of been cool if the whole album was like that

Yeah, especially maturing in the world of punk.
like, in the same year the sums "matured" with Chuck, Good Charlotte matured with their mature album, and Green Day too.

But anyway, yeah, its pretty much true that the critics gonna eat them alive like that, though the only problem is that they already did with Underclass Hero and mosto of the critics hated it, which based on some's reviews just shows they haven't checked out the whole CD, how typical.

i dont agree with that.
The critics keep bringing down Underclass Hero, saying it sounds like American Idiot and calling it American Idiot 2 (which is very untrue!) or comparing it to Blink 182 which i cannot see!
I mean, AKNF was very similar to Enema of the State but that's it, since then sum went a way away from Blink's style in DTLI and Chuck and UH is different.

Hate those comparisons, especially when they say that March of the Dogs sounds like blink's Easy Target.... WTF? it's not even close!

well the b-sides on Underclass Hero were like there 2nd album but more mature, im not saying it should sound exactly alike

Its just annoying to read those lameass critics bashing your fav. band and comparing the songs to some other bands, while like the March of the Dogs/Easy Target comparison, it has nothing in common!

Yeah, but a lot of the melodies were the same from songs made before. But that happens with every modern musical artist. In the early 90's Nirvana was one of the greatest bands and their number one song had the riff copied off another song.

Nirvana's Smells like a teen spirit riff appears on tons of Nirvana songs, most recentely i noticed it in the beginning of Nirvana's Rape Me, with a slight difference.
