i have to agree with a lot of your points, to be honest. however i don't believe that the bands would CHOOSE to be the victims of 'teenie' magazines. if they're successful and 'good looking' then it's only a matter of time before they're shoved into that category.Gunner wrote:
Yeah, but a lot of the fanbase for these bands are preteens and little girls that don't give a damn about how good the band is at playing their instruments. If it's catchy, they like it, if the band members are heart-throbs, they love them. Bands like Fall Out Boy and Panic! whore the covers of those magazines for girls ages 11-14. My cousin has some of the magazines and I've looked at the captions on the front page and it's all "Pete has a secret G/F!" or "See what FOB has in their personal diaries!" And it pisses me off that that is what kind of publicity the band gets. It has nothing to do with music.
Another thing I find annoying is how the one guitar player looks almost exactly like the guy from Linkin Park, with the beard and the afro-esque hair. Probably not a legit excuse to hate on them... But it annoys the hell out of me. Same with the singer, who can't seem to pronounce his way out of a wet paper bag.
Another thing is that their songs all seem to stay on one central topic. A lot of the songs by FOB and Panic! are about girls and both bands use ridiculously long song titles. Simple Plan too, is a culprit of singing the same topics over and over again. Yes, I get it, you don't want to get pushed around, everyone makes mistakes so let's grow up, fend for ourselves and put some variety into our lyrics.
I can only rant about these guys so far because I don't listen to them. Though I've heard a lot of Simple Plan and FOB in my day. I just can't seem to respect these guys as much as I can Sum 41.
Sorry for the long rant. =P
Oh yeah, don't worry, I know what you mean. I don't try to start anything either that would result in something ugly.lolsteff wrote: i have to agree with a lot of your points, to be honest. however i don't believe that the bands would CHOOSE to be the victims of 'teenie' magazines. if they're successful and 'good looking' then it's only a matter of time before they're shoved into that category.
i'm not personally a fan of any of these bands ANYMORE, but i have listened to all of their music. and the topics do seem to change for the most part. with the exception of simple plan. but some people could listen to simple plan and realize that these people have problems too (whether they actually do or not) and feel better about the situation.
besides, a lot of fall out boy fans could hate sum 41. it's all just opinions. which is exactly what all this is anyway.
oh and i'm totally not starting a fight if that's the vibe i'm giving off. just a normal ~debate~ : D

you say they didnt ask to famous, but i'm pretty sure they were damn well trying to get famous. and i dont think anyone wants 11 year old fans like they have. but yes, it does happen. but in the TTTYG days they did have non 11 year old music, but then, they chose to change, and what do you know, they are popular. and what comes with their popularity, 11 year odl fans. so they should deal with it.Mr. Penguin wrote:If you honestly think that EVERY fan of FOB is an 11-year-old teenie, then you pretty much define ignorant. There's a reason they didn't get famous in the TTTYG days; TTTYG wasn't exactly radio, teenie material. I don't expect everyone to like them, since everyone is obviously going to have different tastes and opinions, but before saying that their music sucks and their fanbase consists of teenage idiots, give them a chance. You might be surprised.
Damn! You are an ignorant. The point of signing to a record label is to make your music well-known. Most bands try to become famous, with a few exceptions obviously.dm_rick wrote:you say they didnt ask to famous, but i'm pretty sure they were damn well trying to get famous. and i dont think anyone wants 11 year old fans like they have. but yes, it does happen. but in the TTTYG days they did have non 11 year old music, but then, they chose to change, and what do you know, they are popular. and what comes with their popularity, 11 year odl fans. so they should deal with it.Mr. Penguin wrote:If you honestly think that EVERY fan of FOB is an 11-year-old teenie, then you pretty much define ignorant. alot of bands "sell out" to hit the mainstream, but fall out boy didnt just gain an 11 year old fanbase, in a way they maintained it and enforced it, alot of the things they do live and the songs they sing seem to ASK for such fans. these are the people that are gonna beg mum and dad to buy the records for them and thats where all the cash isZam wrote:Damn! Now, tell me. If sum 41 didn't want to sell-out, ever, do you think they'd have signed up with Universal Records? No. They have sold out just like a bunch of good bands. Nirvana, blink-182, Green Day... There's nothing you can do to avoid it. And their music is not for 11 year-olds. The fact that 11 year-olds listen to their music doesn't make it crappy. I even bet there are 11 year-olds that listen to Sum 41. And they haven't changed. They have just improved. They make the music they like. Now, if you will, stop being an ignorant.
