i have to agree with a lot of your points, to be honest. however i don't believe that the bands would CHOOSE to be the victims of 'teenie' magazines. if they're successful and 'good looking' then it's only a matter of time before they're shoved into that category.Gunner wrote:
Yeah, but a lot of the fanbase for these bands are preteens and little girls that don't give a damn about how good the band is at playing their instruments. If it's catchy, they like it, if the band members are heart-throbs, they love them. Bands like Fall Out Boy and Panic! whore the covers of those magazines for girls ages 11-14. My cousin has some of the magazines and I've looked at the captions on the front page and it's all "Pete has a secret G/F!" or "See what FOB has in their personal diaries!" And it pisses me off that that is what kind of publicity the band gets. It has nothing to do with music.
Another thing I find annoying is how the one guitar player looks almost exactly like the guy from Linkin Park, with the beard and the afro-esque hair. Probably not a legit excuse to hate on them... But it annoys the hell out of me. Same with the singer, who can't seem to pronounce his way out of a wet paper bag.
Another thing is that their songs all seem to stay on one central topic. A lot of the songs by FOB and Panic! are about girls and both bands use ridiculously long song titles. Simple Plan too, is a culprit of singing the same topics over and over again. Yes, I get it, you don't want to get pushed around, everyone makes mistakes so let's grow up, fend for ourselves and put some variety into our lyrics.
I can only rant about these guys so far because I don't listen to them. Though I've heard a lot of Simple Plan and FOB in my day. I just can't seem to respect these guys as much as I can Sum 41.
Sorry for the long rant. =P
i'm not personally a fan of any of these bands ANYMORE, but i have listened to all of their music. and the topics do seem to change for the most part. with the exception of simple plan. but some people could listen to simple plan and realize that these people have problems too (whether they actually do or not) and feel better about the situation.
besides, a lot of fall out boy fans could hate sum 41. it's all just opinions. which is exactly what all this is anyway.
oh and i'm totally not starting a fight if that's the vibe i'm giving off. just a normal ~debate~ : D

Oh yeah, don't worry, I know what you mean. I don't try to start anything either that would result in something ugly.lolsteff wrote: i have to agree with a lot of your points, to be honest. however i don't believe that the bands would CHOOSE to be the victims of 'teenie' magazines. if they're successful and 'good looking' then it's only a matter of time before they're shoved into that category.

Yeah, I suppose no musician would willingly want to be on the cover of those teenie mags and would rather make the cover of Rolling Stone or something.
A lot of the things that annoy me with FOB are little and seemingly insignificant. One is their repeated stage antic(s). For one, is that "super-mega-charged-up" spin that the one guitarist always does in like every video and every show. I mean, yeah, it was pretty cool when they did it in Dance, Dance. Then after that it's just not impressive and just predictable. Like if Sum 41 were always jump in sync to every interlude to every song.
Heh, I have a lot of pet peeves with these bands, so a lot of the points I bring up aren't even legit arguements, they're just things that annoy me. =P

they're so poppy (Fall Out, Panic, SP and MCR a bit less), I don't like them at all, none of them... Probably I would liked them If they were from the times I listened All Killer the first time, nowdays there's no way I like them... but I have to admit that I did listen SP back in the days of their first album, like 2002... but don't like them anymore.
In the more debate vibe... They sucks musically, except probably for the MCR lead guitar... also it annoys me a lot that they are like "hey we're the best cause we get more magazine covers"
And yeah, probably some of their fans hate Sum 41's ones... but it is like with Good Charlotte as Stevo said... "they are for a younger audience, we aim to play rock, and rock is not for kids" or something like that he said, I don't remember exactly but that was what he meant. It's like, I and maybe a lot of Sum 41 fans were very young at the time when we started to listen Sum 41, but we have grown up as the time passes and so Sum 41 has grown too, both in age and musically. That's why probably we were not going to listen Chuck if it was released years ago because it was the time when we were listening like What's My Age Again? or something else from blink, but when Sum started to have this musical evolution we start to mature too. They are bad to me and people from here, but not bad for the, kind of --- "the new generations" maybe?

If you honestly think that EVERY fan of FOB is an 11-year-old teenie, then you pretty much define ignorant. They didn't ask to be famous. They didn't ask to have one song mean that 11-year-olds depserately want their babies. It's just how things happened. There's a reason they didn't get famous in the TTTYG days; TTTYG wasn't exactly radio, teenie material. I don't expect everyone to like them, since everyone is obviously going to have different tastes and opinions, but before saying that their music sucks and their fanbase consists of teenage idiots, give them a chance. You might be surprised.

you say they didnt ask to famous, but i'm pretty sure they were damn well trying to get famous. and i dont think anyone wants 11 year old fans like they have. but yes, it does happen. but in the TTTYG days they did have non 11 year old music, but then, they chose to change, and what do you know, they are popular. and what comes with their popularity, 11 year odl fans. so they should deal with it.Mr. Penguin wrote:If you honestly think that EVERY fan of FOB is an 11-year-old teenie, then you pretty much define ignorant. I do hate P!ATD but FOB did have a bunch of good songs.
And if you're hating em just cuz everybody else seems to........ Hmm.... The nicest way to put it would be... GTFO!
Anyone who dares say I'm a sell-out/gay cuz I listen to them deserves to die. Respect my musical likings.

Damn! You are an ignorant. The point of signing to a record label is to make your music well-known. Most bands try to become famous, with a few exceptions obviously.dm_rick wrote:you say they didnt ask to famous, but i'm pretty sure they were damn well trying to get famous. and i dont think anyone wants 11 year old fans like they have. but yes, it does happen. but in the TTTYG days they did have non 11 year old music, but then, they chose to change, and what do you know, they are popular. and what comes with their popularity, 11 year odl fans. so they should deal with it.Mr. Penguin wrote:If you honestly think that EVERY fan of FOB is an 11-year-old teenie, then you pretty much define ignorant. Now, tell me. If sum 41 didn't want to sell-out, ever, do you think they'd have signed up with Universal Records? No. They have sold out just like a bunch of good bands. Nirvana, blink-182, Green Day... There's nothing you can do to avoid it. And their music is not for 11 year-olds. The fact that 11 year-olds listen to their music doesn't make it crappy. I even bet there are 11 year-olds that listen to Sum 41. And they haven't changed. They have just improved. They make the music they like. Now, if you will, stop being an ignorant.

alot of bands "sell out" to hit the mainstream, but fall out boy didnt just gain an 11 year old fanbase, in a way they maintained it and enforced it, alot of the things they do live and the songs they sing seem to ASK for such fans. these are the people that are gonna beg mum and dad to buy the records for them and thats where all the cash isZam wrote:Damn! zam i can understand if you like them, but i agree with dm_rick in saying that they changed for fame. i hate the whole "scene" they've fallen into, along with the other fake bands out there, just like Topman have fallen into the Nu-Rave scene
it all comes down to what you make, and what you plan to do with it, fall out boy started to make shitty pop anthems, and by doing that they didnt NEED to plan what to do with it, it just fell into the hands of those 11 year olds. but by no way are they "upset" by this fame, and for that they are the biggest crappest fakest most annoyingly disgusting posers
oh and btw, pete wentz makes me vomit... literally... i would so wanna punch his "pretty boy" face if i met him =]
