If zombies came and the army was not able to contain it within an hour the world would infact, end.
One, the disease would spread like fire becoming uncontrollable.
What would need to be done is to nuke the entire area thats infected. But it wouldn't be done because of environmentalist groups and just because of the countless un-infected they'd be killing.
So they'd probably do two of the following.
Tell any leaving to stay locked in houses/etc and completely block off the infected area with the army and try to go through and destroy any infected.
(this next is most likely) tell people to evacuate the area so they could deal with it. With this method infected would get out and overrun the blockades.
If the disease is like the one in 28 days then I'm pretty sure the world WOULD end. That disease takes seconds to infect. So I correct myself, they wouldn't need to nuke. they'd need to vaporize everything. by burning it. Thats the only way to kill the germs.
If its the slow dumb zombies in other movies, then it'd probably be containable.

the best place to survive a zombie attack would be on an oil rig, or a deserted island (with plenty of food).
#1 rule: dont lock yourself in - they WILL get in somehow. (eg. shaun of the dead, 28 days later, dawn of the dead, night of the living dead)
