They recorded "about 19 songs on drums so far" for Underclass Hero (at least that's what D said in the 2006 studio update). So, 18 songs including B-sides were released with UH, while there were actually at least 21 songs written, because two were acoustic (no drums). I know there was also a pre-UH rehearsal video, where they played a completely unknown song. I wonder if any of those unheard songs were "recycled" for the new album.

That's what i always wondered. Use songs that didn't make the record next time around. I mean, why not?

Well, this time rather not.

Because if they fit in into the UH-album, I don't think they would fit in into this new one.
UH was kinda a 'theme'-album, you know.

For example: I don't think a song from American Idiot would have fit in into 21st Century Breakdown. Maybe musical wise, but no other than that.

If Deryck says those songs will make a great 'addition', I expect 2 more songs on the album than the ones that are on it so far. "Add those songs, don't replace others"

I mean in a rewritten way, like Subject To Change -> Underclass Hero

If i was promised 19 songs, I'd be willing to wait another 7 months. Really, i would.

I wouldn't. I think they've already spent more time writing songs for this album than they have Underclass Hero. Deryck said he spent 10 months writing songs for Underclass Hero and that ended up being the 19 or whatever they had when they went into the studio.

I get what you mean. I'm sure he's had some unfinished ideas that from past albums that he's finally able to follow through with. I remember Deryck saying he wanted to write a song like Dear Father since Does This Look Infected? but just didn't have the confidence or guts to put words to paper. [tangent]Though, now that's he's finally done it, I don't understand what was so difficult, seeing as how that song is lyrically ambiguous and nothing explicitly personal is revealed (in comparison to say how Eminem describes events in his life).[/tangent]

I'm not into rewriting the songs, though we never heard an early version of them.

Maybe -one day- they can bring out some special album with like Cone's song, some unreleased B-sides and shit, some of them we never knew even existed.

I prefer an idea like that than recycling songs.

Lol, I think he meant the actual live performance which would be kind of hard to do when you're dead.

This. Fuck the B-sides if we'll never get a chance to see them live. :silly:

How can you be 99% done when you still need to record 2 songs?

I guess he means 99% written.

Which is weird.

In my own opinion I would have like a clear vision of what I want to record before I go into the studio.
Maybe add one more song in the process.

But certainly not 'a few' after all the other songs being mixed already. The new songs won't have the time that's necessary to grow.

Well, you're not him. He probably just likes those songs too much and doesn't want the album to be released without them. I don't think it's weird at all. I can perfectly understand this feeling right before finishing something, that you suddenly come up with so many things that you still want to add, do differently or get rid of.

Because after one song it recorded it is 99.5% done and when the other song it done that makes 100% done.

Haha, look what I just came up with..
Image
We should all print out this one, put it on (our) cars and then tweet pics of it @Sum41
Or even better: Send it to a sticker printing shop in LA and have it delivered to Deryck's house, so he can decorate his ridiculous Maserati with it, lol.
Heather? :devious:

I do understand he wants to add things and stuff, but the thing is: they've had like sooo much time to do things. And I know creativity shows up when you don't expect it, but I don't know...

With Stevo's accident (that almost looked like a signal from the label) he already received some extra time. But I thought this was meant to mix the album and stuff, not for adding some other songs.

But then again, as I said, creativity shows up when you don't expect it to.
