It's certainly not the preferred way of doing things. I wouldn't want to be miserable just to write a song in hopes it would be good. But it gives you a different angle to work with as opposed to being happy.

Case in point: Deryck wrote Underclass Hero under the mindset of "making the best thing Sum 41 has ever done". With Screaming Bloody Murder he does not care at all ("we're back, fuck you" mindset) and I think that freed him up creatively big time. It shows on this song.

The chorus sounds a little like "New Divide" to me, but I really love it.

It kind of gives me a contrast of how to think in life to be successful, either go for what you think is best... Or just fuck everything and give it all.

after the clean guitar intro, the tone of the instruments sound like a green day song i can't put my finger on. thats the only part for me.

Like the guitar tone at the beginning of Letterbomb? I agree that that guitar tone reminded me of past tones I've heard, not necessarily of the actual song, if that makes any sense.
