After reading your posts both Jeremy and Heather I realize it makes sense. I mean, I never really thought about "A Dark Road Out Of Hell" as being about the divorce, well at least not totally about it. To me he was kinda talking about his whole life, but now after seeing you posts, I tend to think he's talking about his years with Avril.

masturbation is the most significant and meaningful sign of the whole humanity, there is a program in our brains which leads us straightly to masturbation, no need for feelings there, not even desire, masturbation is a habit
This is Mark Allen Hoppus. He likes long walks on the beach. This, this is travis barker. He likes to be read poetry just before sunset. And me, I like to stick small pieces of furniture up my butt.

My personal opinion? It translates to: A Dark Road Out of A Divorce. Denial to anger and finally to acceptance... It's a little journey from 2009 to 2011 in how Deryck felt about the whole thing. That's how I like to see it anyway. Looking at the lyrics, it really makes sense.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
especially the line "I don't want to know what I think I suppose" like he knows what she's been doing and knows its going to end "if this is goodbye, then forever's just a lie" and "big enough to make you wanna try" hints he did try to save the marriage. but yeah, consciously or unconsciously its about what happened in 09 - 10 and how he dealt with everything "while looking for the answers only questions come to mind", the journey through it and when he finally leaves "as I depart its not so hard". And HM makes me think he wants to feel the way he did with Av again, but doesn't have "time for the scars to heal"
As well as the line at the end of Holy Image of Lies: "You have your scars, but I never thought that you would give me mine." When I first listened to A Dark Road Out of Hell, I had no idea what was going on and what the point of the song was. However, I think it kind of resembles the Kübler-Ross Model (aka The Five Stages of Grief) even though you can only pick out three stages from the songs at best. Holy Image of Lies (Denial Stage), Sick of Everyone (Anger Stage), Happiness Machine (Acceptance Stage).

I know in interviews Deryck and the band have said time and time again that Screaming Bloody Murder was not a "divorce album". In my opinion though, many of the songs have roots stemming from the divorce and even Deryck has started to be less adamant about the album's content and what it is or isn't supposed to be about. He just says he wrote what he felt at the time and whatever came out came out. He doesn't fully deny or confirm anything.

Take Crash for example. Clearly the song is not about supposed to be about Avril, but when Deryck sang the words "I was supposed to grow old with you, but that ain't gonna happen" in the studio do you think he was thinking about being some random dying guy on the street talking to a faceless wife/significant other? Or do you think an image of Avril slipped in his mind as he sang those words?

tl;dr - Basically, I see a lot of these songs being tied to the divorce, whether it's a single lyric or an entire song. Exceptions to this are Time for You to Go and Baby You Don't Wanna Know. I find those songs to be too generic to have any real meaning. They are just the "fun songs" on the album. Jessica Kill is another exception. The rest of the songs, I believe, have at least one lyric rooted to the divorce.

I see ADROOH as focussing on life and times of trouble as a whole but the divorce was obviously a heavy influence in this. Same with other songs such as BIME & WAITS- influenced by Avril but not based on her. Crash is obviously not connected at all to the divorce because of its age.

Those are some good observations about A Dark Road Out Of Hell. Like Deryck said, we all can interpret the songs the way we think they are supposed to be about, even Deryck doesn't really know exactly himself. I think those are some good points though!

yeah I really didn't even think about interpreting the songs at first listen. The only one I did that with is WAITS, to me its the most clearly based on Avril. And like Jer said, he's hasn't been very candid about the lyrics to this album and has given very generic answers to Avril questions, showing he doesn't want to talk about it, which is most likely why he says he doesn't know what they're about. But in some lyrics its pretty obvious, others I think are just about life in general.

And minus the words "girl" and "baby" in TFYTG and BYDWK, I kinda interpret that to be his message to the label barking out orders, pushing him and disliking their behavior (drinking)..haha

It’s like sounding really nice, having a good feel, that’s all about the guitar.
That’s what I care about. I’d rather be a better strummer than fuckin' jizz all over the fuckin' fretboard...
