Verses are so good in this song, the melody is so catchy. I think I wouldn't have appreciated this song as much if I would have heard it first time with all the other songs. Listening just this for couple of days has made it my favorite out of the 3 released songs, tho Fake My Own Death is very very close second.

I think Deryck was talking about all of the sub-genres of Rock, and he doesnt't even consider Pop as a genre. He always says on interviews that Sum 41 is a Rock band, not punk rock, pop punk, etc.Iam The Ghost wrote:Well, if we really want to go into it... It's a bit weird for me to hear Deryck singing about this. I mean, they've always said that marking them as one single genre is bullshit and it doesn't really matter at all what genre you listen to if you like it. Just music matters. The whole genre thing is bullshit. And now he says rock is emotional and death to pop? In that context this statement is weird and unneccesary. Also, Deryck said he doesn't really listen to new, today's songs, he prefers old ones and obviously it's unavoidable to catch one or two, but I would suppose he shouldn't be bothered.
Nonetheless, I like this song better than the previous two, despite the inconsistent message.
I really love this song, even though it has similarities to Linkin Park, I think it's wayyy better than The Catalyst, and the message... just perfect. Many people complain about the new stuff that they have added and the layers on Deryck's voice, but that is what he's always said: he likes to add new stuff on every record but keeping their style. Also, Deryck's voice has changed since he got hospitalized, so that's probably why he is using these new layers on his voice. I have to say that I was impressed and a bit confused the first time I listened to FMOD, but I really liked it after a couple listens as well as GSUA and WAR, and I'm sure that I'd still love them as much if they had different layers on his voice or none at all. Everything Sum 41 creates is gold no matter what ;).

I feel like they maybe should've left out the whole "Death to Pop" bit from the title and the music video. I don't really care either way, but because of those things people are prone to deconstruct the song. The thing with "pop" is that it's usually any music with a catchy hook or some sort of catchiness to it. People will say it has "pop elements".

I think the same. It adds nothing to the actual song and since Sum 41 is usually tagged as "pop-punk rock", it is an obvious attack point if they talk about how bad pop is.Jeremy Kill wrote:I feel like they maybe should've left out the whole "Death to Pop" bit from the title and the music video. Honestly I don't care, I just love this song.
I think that part of the title and the intro to the video are unfortunate because a lot of music websites are ripping the band for it and, for the most part, they are completely ignoring the song. They go into it negatively predisposed before they even hear it. And I think it's a great song.
I think the point of the song is to just create a great crowd reaction when played live, and I think it'll do exactly that.

I think the "death to pop" is also a rather clever pun - it alludes to the fact that Deryck had to give up on alcohol, and focusing on rock music helps him stay focused on something and gives meaning to his life - a "lifeline". (pop as in sound of a bottle opening) This is really self-evident in the lyrics aswell how the song deals with his struggle with alcohol:
"Waiting for a sign, I guess I missed it on the way
I tried to walk the line but it's more than I could take" (Just an example)

I thought of that as well. I found it a bit weird POP was written all caps. I do think the video can do without that intro though, it takes away attention of the song.X^2 wrote:I think the "death to pop" is also a rather clever pun - it alludes to the fact that Deryck had to give up on alcohol, and focusing on rock music helps him stay focused on something and gives meaning to his life - a "lifeline". also talks about when the record will require pop songs because they thought the rock was dead and was not commercial.

Re:
For me it's quite like the video for BYDWK, still it's very smooth as you have mentioned and has a more positive vibe to it.Max wrote:I just watched the video and it might be my favourite Sum 41 video in years, the edit is really nice and it just feels natural. Everyone laughing, smiling and having a good time.
I like it when they make a video out of live performances from time to time, but I'm super satisfied that they actually released three videos before the album came out with only one of those three being a single!

It’s like sounding really nice, having a good feel, that’s all about the guitar.
That’s what I care about. I’d rather be a better strummer than fuckin' jizz all over the fuckin' fretboard...
