Anyone Else Kinda Amazed...
... that the sums have gone through such radical changeS in sound over the years? like i was drumming to a dark road out of hell today and thought, "how could they have written this and fat lip?" it got me thinking about other bands that went through crazy changes over the years, and i still can't really think of any who have changed their sound as much as the sums have. other candidates for me would be the beatles (obviously), blink, coldplay (listen to early stuff like "everything's not lost, then check out "42" for example), green day (although, unlike these other bands, they got worse imo), and radiohead (went from alternative to a plethora of sounds). of these bands, though, i think only the beatles really stack up to the sums in terms of changing sounds. i'm sure there's tons of others i missed, so who can you guys think of that have made a sum-like transition (or several of them)?

Rush. but they've been constantly making music for almost 40 years. if you compare "Finding My Way" to "Tom Sawyer" to "Big Money" to "BU2B", there's quite the obvious change but that shouldn't be surprising considering their longevity.

very true. I do like they're newer stuff alot. I'm exited for their new album- but old-school rush (like their first album) is some awsome material too.2712 wrote:Rush. but they've been constantly making music for almost 40 years. if you compare "Finding My Way" to "Tom Sawyer" to "Big Money" to "BU2B", there's quite the obvious change but that shouldn't be surprising considering their longevity.
I just hate their techno/synth phase, with the exeption of a few songs

Re: Anyone Else Kinda Amazed...
It's not even like the Sums are an old band either. As far as bands go, they're very new on the scene. A lot of popular modern day rock bands were well into their careers before the Sums even formed. Eg. Green Day is 22 years old now; they were putting stuff out in the 80s, and how have they changed in comparison to the Sums? None at all. I guess I just love Deryck's philosophy that no two albums should ever be too similar. He is constantly moving on, exploring new directions while making everything he writes still distinctly Sum 41. That's the mark of true musicianship.
I think the next album will go a step in the style that SBM hinted at - with the influences that prompted SBM to be so dark gone, I think we can expect a real heavy, yet upbeat rock album.
Either that, or Death Metal

Re: Anyone Else Kinda Amazed...
I found this on a review of Linkin Park's A Thousand Suns and thought it particularly apt for this thread.
I think there's a little we can all learn from this. It's funny how the music business works. Release an amazing debut album, and it is generally recognized as such by critics and laymen, helps to set a new genre standard, is replayed for years, and assists the band in building a huge fanbase. After that is when things get weird. If the band in question decides not to vary their formula, makes mediocre music that retains many of the elements of their original material, and plays it safe, their fans stick by them and the critics aren't too harsh (see: the response to my review of the new Goo Goo Dolls album). However, if the band realizes that to make a real, long-lasting impact on the world they must be fluid, maturing with every album, changing their sound, exploring new territory, they are vilified by former "fans" and critics alike. They are disparaged all over the internet, ignored and/or disemboweled by elitist music listeners, and their efforts at making cutting-edge, mature, different music are mocked, whether or not the mockery is justified. And in many cases, it isn't.

Re: Anyone Else Kinda Amazed...
their new songs kick ASS! i read that they're also gonna include another "EPIC" song with various parts on this next album. i have to say i don't really listen to many songs from their late 80's-90's era. Vapour Trails is good, but the production is kinda shitty which is why i kinda don't listen to it as much. but One Little Victory... holy shit.cladam41 wrote:very true. Re: Anyone Else Kinda Amazed...
I don't mean to be a major dick with my post, but I feel like Brand New changes so much quicker than any of those other bands. Blink-182, for example, changed their sound very little throughout their records up until the final record that they have produced. I guess you could argue that they changed between Dude Ranch and Enema of the State, but in reality they kind of just polished their sound rather than really "changed" much. The recordings were better, the band just sounded better as a result.Tyler41 wrote:Right? That's a band that changes literally every album (and never disappoint either)Mothafucking Monster wrote:lol? Re: Anyone Else Kinda Amazed...
Blink did change a fair bit. If you listen to all their albums in a row they actually have very different sounds, EOTS and TOYPAJ are pretty different styles really. At a glance you'd think they're just the same but they're heaps different. They didn't change any less than any other bands mentioned here really.

Re: Anyone Else Kinda Amazed...
As I've said in every post in this thread, compare Blink's change between TOYPAJ and Untitled to every single Brand New album. Brand New has changed as much between each album as Blink has changed between just those two albums.Tyler. wrote:Blink did change a fair bit. Re: Anyone Else Kinda Amazed...
For me Brand New has had a similar change across all their albums to blink, maybe slightly more. They started off as one thing and are totally different if you listen to the last album, and the in between ones all change a certain amount but have similarities

Re: Anyone Else Kinda Amazed...
What about Danzig? I don't like every album they've put out, but all their albums are in different styles. Especially when you look at Glenn Danzig's entire career (the Misfits, Samhain, his solo stuff, Danzig), the man has probably done just about everything.

Isn't Screaming Bloody Murder essentially just that? It's dark and heavy, still upbeat and melodic and uses all the elements that were in Underclass Hero.HugoDisasters wrote:That would be truly awesome but i would have nothing against a Chuck Pt 2. Starring Underclass Hero

It pretty much is that. Just more on the Chuck side. Not very heavy though to be honest, but dark.Jeremy Kill wrote:Isn't Screaming Bloody Murder essentially just that? SBM is really not like Chuck
It's like UH with a heavy switch turned on. Chuck was a different type of heavy.
