I like how everyone is talking about an indie band on a Sum 41 thread...but Sum 41 won't top them though, they are just too brilliant....and yes i have been listening to them before the awards were given

I've known about them since their video for "Rebellion (Lies)" was released in 2005. It got a lot of Canadian airplay. I guess that's why. Their getting pretty well known now, yeah, but Sum 41 blows them out of the water. Sum 41 have been around longer and are internationally well known so I can see a win for The Sums. I can see it being close though.

Well you have to understand, the fact that they are more well known and that they've been around longer has nothing to do with creativity. If your talking on that term Arcade Fire certainly wins that. i love Sum 41, but they aren't the best band ever.

Haha, you can't just say Arcade Fire are more creative than Sum 41! They're a great band, but their songwriting isn't on another level like Dylan or Young. Even then, one can't just say that they're more creative than anyone else - it's all subjective really.

I'm seeing a win for AF in this anyway, simply because it's on an MTV website and they're immensely popular at the minute.

Well, I'm not just saying this and being biased because Sum 41 are my favourite band. I just think this. And a lot of people will probably end up voting for Sum 41 for nostalgic reasons. Anyway, we should be discussing this in the thread for the MTV Winter in Valencia special.

kinda off-topic, but i hate it when people give absurd praise to old artists just cuz they have a rep and were important many years ago. imo there's nothing amazing about dylan or young's songwriting, people just overrate them cuz they're "classics." i mean neither of them have nearly the diversity of even the sums, let alone bands today w/ better songwriters. rant aside, holy shit 11 days.

I am in no way giving absurd praise to 'old artists'. In my (and millions of others) opinions, those two men are two of the greatest living songwriters in the world today. Their back catalogues are often seen as measuring sticks for intregity and greatness.

To say that Bob Dylan or Neil Young don't have nearly the diversity of Sum 41 is actually just factually incorrect. Both artists have over forty albums each to Sum 41's five and a half. Even if each of Sum 41's albums were completely different genre's and styles, their body of work wouldn't be half as diverse as Dylan or Young's. That's just the way it is.

The funny thing is, you infer that they were only important many years ago - but the only reason both have managed to remain so vital is because their work has been so diverse down the years. I mean, Neil Young has churned out acoustic and electric solo albums, rock albums with his band, played in a jazz band, spent half a decade putting out synthesized music, has had Pearl Jam and Booker T and the MG's as his backing bands. All that is before you even to begin to disect his lyrical content and stylings. Metaphors, euphemisms, ridiculously complex language. Then some of his stuff is so direct that a four year old could get it.

Then you have Dylan, he alienated the majority of his fanbase by changing from acoustic to electric in the late sixties. His lyrical content was always poetic beyond anything that any of his contemporaries had ever produced. Then he changed things up in the seventies and started writing more direct and engaging lyrics that the ordinary listener could relate to. Next he makes albums with church choirs, throws out a Christmas album.

Off topic indeed.

It doesn't do it all the time though. I've voted then waited ages and it lets me vote again saying 'thank you' or whatever.

Also, really surprised the album hasn't leaked.

David Bowie,Jim Morrison,Ian Curtis,Dylan,Lennon,Cobain - I don't care about their life,I listen to their music and their creativity is unbelievable , lyrics wrote metaphorically , music awesome and we don't talk about their charisma yet, three of them was killed by their own personality ...
This is Mark Allen Hoppus. He likes long walks on the beach. This, this is travis barker. He likes to be read poetry just before sunset. And me, I like to stick small pieces of furniture up my butt.

I spy on my dad while he is taking a shower just like everyone else
Mark: Sometimes when I talk in 3rd person i end up calling tom mark
Tom:Yea than he starts touching me and i think thats masturbation
Some people think were idiots or perverts dont argue were both.
"i think we're gonna be one of those bands thats around forever and even makes records, even if noones buying them and using them for toilet paper...but we'll still make them because we'll be the best fuckin toilet paper anyones ever used...." - Tom Delonge

Ian Curtis is amazing indeed! And so underrated from all of those you mentioned here.

Anyway, the thread is officially raped and I bet it'll keep that way unless the album will leak already! It's the only March album that hasn't leaked yet!!
