Interview with Steve for Hollywood Dame
How did Sum 41 come together and how did you come up with the name?
We got together on the 41st day of summer in 1986 after a Warped Tour concert.
How would you describe the sound of your music?
Our music is heavy and aggressive. It’s fast and fun. Very melodic.
How has your music changed since you first started?
I think we’ve become better. Our songwriting have improved and become much more honest. Our musicianship has improved. We’ve taken giant leaps forward and have more confidence.
What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen or experienced while touring?
All sorts of things. But the craziest has to be a documentary in Africa we were shooting. The Democratic Republic of Congo wanted a band to come over and document the civil war in the country and while we were there all sorts of fighting broke out, and it became this crazy battle with shots being fired, mortars, people dying… We couldn’t get out, so we were stuck, but also dodging bullets and grenades and RPG’s and stuff. We started running from room to room because rooms were getting blown up. We had to be evacuated by the UN… I think that was the craziest thing I ever experienced in life.
What are some things you like to do when you are not touring?
We all do our own things. I like to direct music videos, Cone has a side project called ‘The Operation M.D.’, Deryck likes to produce and write for people. We really all just enjoy being in one place for a while.
Have you toured with anyone that you look at as major influences?
Metallica, Motley Crue, and everyone on Warped Tour have been the most influencing, like Pennywise and NOFX. We worked with Iggy Pop as well. We have major respect for everyone we’ve ever worked with.
Who would you love to work with in the studio, or to tour with?
We’ve worked with tons of people. A lot of our collaborations in the past, we’ve been asked to do. I can’t really think of anyone at the moment, except for maybe Elvis Costello.
Your new album ‘Screaming Bloody Murder’ comes out March 29th. How is it different from your past records, but also how you stay true to the Sum 41-sound that everybody knows and loves.
We’ve always tried different things and explored different sounds. I think our fans, when we sound different, they are fine with that. The new album is darker, heavier, and more aggressive. It’s more melodic and fans will be able to see that.
What do you think the new album will encompass that previous albums haven’t?
I don’t know really. We don’t really think about it that way. The new album reeks new levels of honesty to it. It’s not forced or faked. It has sincere, raw honesty to it that a lot of artists can never get.
What’s the next step for you guys?
Just to keep touring. Our album comes out on the 29th so we’ll keep touring for the next two years or so.

Re: "Screaming Bloody Murder" Discussion!
I think Deryck has stated many times that he hates producing. He only "likes" to produce Sum 41 because he's a control freak and hasn't agreed with the vision of hired producers. He tried producing some other band (forgot the name) but he hated it. He only produced Avril because they were together / are friends.Stevo wrote:"We got together on the 41st day of summer in 1986 after a Warped Tour concert."

It's actually 1996, somebody must have heard an "eight" when he said "ninety ninety six"Ferdehh41 wrote:Interview with Steve for Hollywood Dame

This seems to be the tracklist that everyone and their dog (myself included) hopes/thinks it's going to be, despite sum41.com stating otherwise.SickofEveryone wrote:Track List according to Amazon.com

Fairly strong tracklisting if you ask me.

Yeah I hope the one on Amazon is the good one. But right now I don't know what to believe.. I doubt that the one on sum 41's site is the good one 'cause over now is still in there and Matt said that it was a working title.

This may seem like a stupid question, but who operates the Sum 41 twitter these days? Is it Deryck or Matt or what?

Some of it sounds like Steve even with his own Twitter.blackhawk1105 wrote:Most of it is probably Matt..Gregorovich wrote:This may seem like a stupid question, but who operates the Sum 41 twitter these days? Is it Deryck or Matt or what?
Somebody should just ask Sum 41 to give us the official track list because I'm pretty sure the one on iTunes is wrong.

Re: "Screaming Bloody Murder" Discussion!
I think the ones from Amazon, iTunes, etc. are the right ones.
Even though Sum41.com states otherwise, I has "Dark Road Out of Hell" and "Over Now" and we know these are not titles that appear on the final tracklit (with Dark Road Out of Hell being the name of the 12 minutes combined). Well, their official site is shit, they say so themselves haha, and they even said TNS is better..
Especially since they linked from their Facebook page to this Australian iTunes pre-order and Canadian pre-order, which had the tracklist with "Crash" and "Holy Image of Lies".

Re: "Screaming Bloody Murder" Discussion!
Somebody just did, and Cone confirmed it's the one that every legit site has, excluding Island Records.kILLDR3n wrote:Some of it sounds like Steve even with his own Twitter.blackhawk1105 wrote:Most of it is probably Matt..Gregorovich wrote:This may seem like a stupid question, but who operates the Sum 41 twitter these days? Sum 41 Twitter is mostly, if not completely, run by Matt. Facebook on the other hand is both Matt and the label/management.

Re: "Screaming Bloody Murder" Discussion!
Their tweets mostly contain bad but still kinda funny jokes... I believe it's indeed run by Matt.
Re: "Screaming Bloody Murder" Discussion!
remember when we got the first tracklist? (not the one with hell song pt 2) and someone asked matt about it and he said that "over now" was the only one that was a working title? but in that tracklist there were other track names that were incorrect like all comes to an end, or sick of it all, so couldn't he have said that those were wrong too? i'm not saying that matt isn't a reliable resource, but i think the label has most of the power in these kinds of things. even in interviews and stuff, it sounds like the band members aren't even sure of some track names (like tom's first mention of dark road out of hell)
