I think it's really cool that Deryck avoids pain meds.

Re: "Screaming Bloody Murder" Discussion!
Absolutely true, my last sentence was just referring to cigarettes/alcohol though, not the painkillers. I've watched Requiem For A Dream .. sick, crazy shit and that's just the movie version of it. Scared the fuck out of me.. certainly not going to risk getting there, ever.pteargriffin wrote:speaking as someone who has been addicted to pain killers after being prescribed on many different occasions, pain killers are a whole other monster and not something to take lightly, he's taking a smart move, i still deal with pain but it's better than being addicted anymore, i admire his strength in the matterSimon wrote:The painkiller part was very interesting. I guess he is much better off just going for the booze instead and he doesn't have to worry about complications/overdoses as long as he stays below his alcoholic-threshold. But since he doesn't even seem to be able to become addicted to cigarettes, I don't see a big problem there.
My only point was, most people who drink just want to catch a good old buzz and enjoy it and don't get addicted easily except for the part where it is fun and we all like fun, while smoking is more of an addictive insecurity/escape/relief/attachment thing and not the pure pleasure effect. You don't enjoy smoking unless you have smoked before for a while and you now need it. You can however enjoy the effect of alcohol the first time, even without enjoying the taste. So in that way, cigarettes are more of an addictive habit and that doesn't seem to apply to Deryck. Either way, I'm glad that he is so reasonable about this.

Re: "Screaming Bloody Murder" Discussion!
In the interview I like the part in which Deryck says "I couldn't incorporate any of that style of new electronic shit that
I know a lot of bands are doing" and "Everyone seems to be trying to fit in elements of electro and other stuff, and we
want to do the opposite of that"
I am very happy reading that Deryck hates electro music too, I hate that kind of music, I also love the fact of Sum 41 trying to be the most different as possible to other bands

Well, painkillers are good as long as you have a pain problem.

I wouldn't necessarily say they are trying to be different, they are just being themselves and saying fuck you to any other expectations, and that's pretty much why I love them so much.marcus10 wrote:I also love the fact of Sum 41 trying to be the most different as possible to other bands

that interview is absolutely fantastic. He's got the same opinion about todays' music as I do. I absolutely hate how every great rock band try to be as successfull as they could by adding poppy, electro sounds to their songs. There is no fucking rock album around. I'm so so so glad Sum 41 aren't one of them and I'm so glad to see that Sums aren't planning anything like this in future.

Very good interview, Deryck is really a person I admire, and as a lot of people here I share the same opinions about music.

Re: "Screaming Bloody Murder" Discussion!
you could write many bands, but there are still bands doing great records ...Breaking Benjamin's last record Dear Agony was still great,or Three Days Grace didn't offend me too...or Gaslight Anthem,or Avenged Sevenfold,or Green Day,Bowling For Soup,The Bridgeheads ...more...
but many of them fucked up though, but I don't mind if they use a different sound because they like it,it only pisses me off when they do it to get successful again ...for example Linking Park sound very different, but I am kinda sure they did the record as it is because they like it that way

Re: "Screaming Bloody Murder" Discussion!
agreed, it's obviously derycks opinion but yeah there's plenty of great bands out there still making great records still putting on great shows, i recently saw jimmy eat world in concert, great records, tries new stuff on their records all the time and puts on a great show, and i only cite them cause they are the most recent show i've seen. great rock records are definitely not as frequent, but i think that's gonna change soon

I'm sorry, are we talking about ROCK??
I'm not saying the bands you're pointing are shit (although I think some are ). But Deryck's right, there's no new Rock record out there that I had the pleasure to hear. I'm talking of really good Rock records...

Re: "Screaming Bloody Murder" Discussion!
Papa Roach used to be a great rock band (between 2002 and 2009 at least) but now theyre into emo glam rock, and claim theyre gonna start to use electronic sounds in their records from now on. And I loved a couple of their previous albums...
fuck this signature nonsense

The new D.R.U.G.S. record is a pretty good rock record that people should take a listen to! Until Sum 41's album comes out.

Re: "Screaming Bloody Murder" Discussion!
Eminem's Relapse was probably the best record of the last 5 years (I even bought it) and ironically the attitude it had, had more in common with great rock than it had with great rap. I haven't listened to Recovery yet though.
But I do kind of agree with Deryck, although I think most of it is just the filter of time and only half-serious or hyperbolically speaking to avoid having to go into the depth of it and realizing it is not actually that simple. I think the missing piece of the puzzle these days is the iconic status, because the pool of bands to choose from has suddenly exploded, which probably empowered him to pursue his own music even more. At least that's how I feel about it and I rarely feel things much differently than him.
