so if deryck is going back to record a final solo, does that mean we're not gonna have insane dave-ish solos on this record? cuz i remember from a previous interview that he was asked if brown tom would be playing any guitar on the record and he repied, "not so much," and he said it in a way sounding like tom's really not gonna be playing much if any on sbm. this would definitely blow because, as good of a songwriter as deryck is, he is not a very good guitarist skill-wise. and i know all you fanboys are gonna freak cuz i said that, but it's true. he's very very average, and brown tom can actually kill on guitar, so i'd definitely rather that he did the solos.

Well, Tom himself said he doesn't wanna really interfere with the recording there, cuz Deryck has wrote all the guitars and all, so he'll be doing them and he doesn't want to ruin that, but he said he did play some guitar where Deryck asked him... I hope it's for some killer leads, if he doesn't play that many. I think it was confirmed that Tom does play on the title track (he also wrote it).. but I dunno, I think he said he's only playing the main riff there or something.

I still think it's kinda dumb to think that Deryck's solo's can't be awesome.. their best solo to date is the hell song solo(imo) and that one was written by Deryck.. who cares about solo's like the one in the bitter end.. it's not that artistic but more a solo to show how fast someone can play a solo.. great solo's don't have to be fast and hard to play

That's right, Deryck CAN write a good solos and he knows Tom will play them on a shows, so he don't write what HE can play but what Tom can play..

I recall Deryck saying he writes most of the the solos anyway

idk i find it hard to believe some of the b.a. non-chuck solos were deryck's (no brains, hooch, in too deep). even if deryck writes the solos, though, i think tom has the skill to pull them off better and should record them on sbm.

I can remember reading somewhere aaaaaages ago (think it was way back when DTLI? came out) that Dave wrote the In Too Deep solo, but for some reason Deryck ended up recording it, and also that Deryck wrote the solo in the Hell Song.

Also, I can't remember Deryck ever saying he wrote the solos. I remember he claimed he wrote most of the riffs, but then Dave said it wasn't exactly true and he was disappointed that Deryck would say that.

I know that Deryck gave Dave the freedom to write solo's during the chuck era and the only thing that Dave wrote that wasn't a solo was the bitter end intro

I can imagine that because the rest of the record is pretty basic stuff if you leave out the solos.

Makes sense, because the early solos were always very different live compared to the studio version. Dave has a different playing style and he always "screwed up" a little or added something to the earlier solos. It never seemed like he had already practiced solos for days or weeks during the recording process until Chuck came along.

Apparently Brown-Tom wrote screaming bloody murder according to an interview with Sum 41 france, so its possible that not all the songs are written by Deryck

this is pretty old news.. he wrote the music(Deryck may have changed a few parts) and recorded some guitar parts for it and Deryck wrote the lyrics.

I believe this song used to be called panic attack
