Question about Deryck's stage guitars

Post by Andyrew004 »

So I have a question about his black tele's.

I noticed he obviously uses one that pretty much a pimped out 72 tele (like the sweet california scum replica), and the other one that looks like the Squier.

My question is, does he use that squier version of his guitar live?

And if so, did he pretty much just take the tone knob and pot out of it or something?

He does use the squier live too..
he took out 3 knobs.(only 1 volume knob left) he took out the neck pickup and replaced the bridge pickup with a HB102 pickup and he placed the red X's on it

I don't think Deryck has used his Squier since shows from 2007 and early 2008. Even then he used it very little. It acted as a back up when the Fender broke a string during Walking Disaster at the Orange Lounge performance.

The two '72 Telecaster Deluxe's he's using are the one with the neck pickup:

And the one that resembles his Squier:

^Note that since this picture was taken, he has taken the tone knob out of this guitar.

Though Deryck's guitar is customized, it's not really better than the original '72 Deluxe. I mean, you're taking away one pickup, and all the tone knobs. You're basically dumbing down the guitar to the basic bare bones. Not necessarily a bad thing though.

I didn't notice he removed the knob.
He probably wants the guitar to look flat, or just just does it for an unknown reason :D

Thanks man! That clears a lot of things up for me. When I saw them live, I couldn't get a clear look at the headstock, so I wasn't sure if he was using his squier version or not.

Are the two guitars in different tunings or something? Maybe Eb and Drop C or something?

This was the only picture I really had to reference.

Doesn't he just use his squire for promotional performances?

That's the main tele he uses. It's always had the input in that spot I believe.

Image
^That one looks similiar but is a different tele.

^^yeah you're right, I was thinking the first pic looked odd, didn't remember a tone being there. Then I got confused and..yeah..Here is both of them, but you can't see the one in the back very well.

I think he took it out because he never uses the tone knob. Also when he plays live and needs to turn down the volume on the guitar he wouldn't accidentally touch the tone instead.

I'm not quite sure about that, though if anyone who's been to the shows recently can remember what songs he played with what guitar, then we'd be able to tell. But as far as I know both guitars would be in Eb.

Also, it's weird about Deryck's first Telecaster (with neck pickup). I think both input jack's are working. Sometimes he's got the guitar plugged into the side.

Image

He's done the same thing to his guitars in the past. The Telecaster HH and this SG. I don't think the neck pickup is active in that guitar either.

why would he use a squier live? that'd be weird. and i think someone said he has so that's very weird. i'm sure he can afford plenty of fenders and the squier would feel like shit in comparison even if he changed the pick ups.

i know tom delonge used the epiphone version of his guitar once though, then handed it to someone in the crowd.

Does he even have a Squier? Even if he does I'm 100% sure he would never use that live anyway yeah.

He has his signature squire and he has used it in past performances. I don't think he's ever used it for an actual tour show though.

kinda off topic:
the strange thing about Deryck is that he has his picks scatterd all over the floor while Cone and Tom just have them in a pick holder that's attached to their mic stands

Yeah, Deryck used his Squier in a couple live performances in 2007 when his guitar was still new.

Image
No shot of the headstock, but you can tell it's the Squier by the symmetry of X's.
I'm pretty sure he's using the Squier in this video as well.

Deryck in the lives use a Fender Tele and in the studio he use some different guitars like gretsch or les paul junior, les paul standard
