The Epicness that is Chuck
Lol... yep, that's how epic it is^
Anyway, this is just a discussion type thread for the album Chuck, and even a bit of the background. (Sorry if there's already a Chuck thread.)
And by background, I mean the whole Congo incident and why the album's named Chuck. I actually got the documentary Sum 41 had in the Congo, and it's good, I recommend it. I used it for a paper in school focusing on that xD.
So, what do you all think about Chuck, and, if you've seen it, Sum 41's documentary?

Re: The Epicness that is Chuck
I didn't enjoy Chuck when it first came out. I felt it was too slow and depressing. It was just so much darker than anything the band had ever done. I remember the first listen on Some Say it was like:
"Wha... what's that at the beginning?... This song is so different, but it's like I've heard it before... I like it, but it's also weird..."
Then I realized: it was a slow song! Something Sum 41 never did in Does This Look Infected?. I then later realized the reason it sounded familiar was because of Handle This. Anyway, back on to Chuck. I instantly fell in love with No Reason when I first heard it. It was a loud song that said, "We're back (crazy) motherfuckers! We're Sum 41 and don't you ever forget it!" At least, that's what the beginning made me feel.
Nowadays, I look back and although it seems to mark a dark time not only in the band's sound, but in the band's relationship itself, there are a lot of masterpiece Sum 41 song in there. We're All to Blame becomes a fucking anthem in the final chorus and is easily one of the best songs the band has written, along with 88. Even Deryck thinks 88 is one of the best songs he's written as it shows that the band has talent. Acoustic guitars, piano, slow parts, fast parts, riffs and solos... The chorus is great and when the song ends into that weird alien sounding abyss, you can't help but reminisce on the whole album like, "Wow... that was Chuck."
Sorry for making this tl;dr for some people!

While I agree that Chuck is a great album, my favourite is probablly Underclass Hero (don't judge me), because of the songwriting. I really like Chuck's darker songs though

Yeah, in terms of lyrics, I didn't really like Chuck. By the time I got to Angels with Dirty Faces, I found myself wondering how many times the word "blame" was used.BanZ0 wrote:While I agree that Chuck is a great album, my favourite is probablly Underclass Hero (don't judge me), because of the songwriting. Re: The Epicness that is Chuck
They have a lot of words/phrase that are used in more then one of their songs. We're all to blame, some say, etc etc. I guess it kind of brought the album together, like a concept album, but it did get annoying.Jeremy Kill wrote:Yeah, in terms of lyrics, I didn't really like Chuck. Still, I like the lyrics before because of their serious tone, and I felt like I could relate to a bunch of them.

Chuck is alright. Underclass Hero is alright. I'm more of a AKNF/DTLI fan.

Re: The Epicness that is Chuck
For me, Chuck was my least favourite of their albums when it came out. Back in the day I wasn't totally into the heavier guitar tones or metal influenced solos. Now I love the album, and I think it was overlooked by many people when it came out (especially as it came out after American Idiot). Whenever I mention Sum 41 to my friends here in England, alot of them say "whatever happened to them?"...

Nothing to add there. Almost 100% identical to my impressions. The Congo DVD also had a very strong impact on me, I can't even describe it.Jeremy Kill wrote:I didn't enjoy Chuck when it first came out. I felt it was too slow and depressing. Re: The Epicness that is Chuck
Pieces was the song that made me fall in love with Sum41 & was the first album of theirs I bought. I listened to it a lot when I wasn't happy with things in my life. Some Say & 88 are amazing imo. SS for the lyrics, 88 for the combo of elements. I really like all their albums so I can't pick a "favorite" I have fave songs from all of them.

Re: The Epicness that is Chuck
When Chuck came out, I barely knew about Sum 41. I was in 6th grade, and had heard Fat Lip before (without knowing who it was by) and I saw The Hell Song's music video years before. My sister always watched Fuse, and I'd watch it alot with her. That was back when all the good music was coming out, back in 2004, like Sum41 obviously, and MCR had their first hit, and much more good stuff. I got hooked on Sum41 after my sister made me a mix CD with The Hell Song and Over My Head on it. Soon after, she burned me a copy of Chuck, and the rest is history! So Chuck plays a big role in the music I listen to. It got me started.

Re: The Epicness that is Chuck
Pretty much agreeing with everyone -
I always got into their albums after their release, I didn't like DTLI until I got more into punk and I didn't like Chuck until I start listening to a bit of metal. They all just grew on me. AKNF was huge in the UK when it came out so naturally I liked it but it grew on me again when I was older and that's when I started getting into Sum 41 properly again.
Underclass Hero I got into at first because it was the stage where I had to like anything they made and then hated it for a bit because it wasn't the classic fast paced no piano pop punk I liked. Getting back into it a bit though.
Who knows what I'll be like with SBM.
