I had an assignment in my Visual Communications class to create an album cover for a CD.
Coincidentally, I have some friends in a band, Leaning Tree, that are playing some gigs and making an album.
The album is called "Carpe Omnia," which means "seize it all" in latin, as you might know.
I worked with 2 concepts, one being a giant tree that is shaped like a hand, reaching out, two being some trees whose roots turn into hands which are seizing everything beneath them. (the world)
Let me know what you think!
First here is the finished product, Idea 2, that I turned in for the class:
Rough draft of Idea 2
First draft Idea 1
Second Draft Idea 1
Third Draft Idea 1 (I kind of gave up on these)

I don't like it. There, i said it.
It's kinda cool, but at the same time it looks like an African adventure article. And the text at the bottom is hard to read.
No mean to be a dick, just trying to give good criticism. I couldn't make it, so good job. But that's just my opinions.

I don't like the text you used for "Leaning Tree" tbh.
Also, the 2 halves of the pic don't seem to mix very well imo. I think it's mostly the background on the upper half that doesn't make it look too good. I like the hands thing though! Awesome idea!

I really like the concept of it, with the hands being the roots. Generally, everything looks good and really well done. Even though I'm from Canada, there's something about nature pictures that kind of bores me. It doesn't seem to really stand out for me.

it's the text at the top that ruins it for me. I like the idea of the tree and hands though

Re: Album Art (for my friends' band)
It's not really as bad as you think at first glance. I think the problems are:
- The "Leaning Tree" text definitely don't reflect a leaning tree where as Carpe Omnia definitely has the right text style.
- It's the wrong size, I've never seen an album cover that's that shape.
- The hands don't look natural. Look at the first finger and thumb.
- Carpe Omnia needs to stick out a little more. I'm guessing you've overlayed the text and added a stroke outline, it's nice but needs to stick out more.
- Is the band called Leaning Tree or Carpe Omnia. Obviously I know which one because you've told us but would you be able to tell the difference if you saw it in a shop?
- Do you own any of the images used in the album art or do you have permission of whoever owns them?
Maybe I'm taking this a bit too seriously but at least now you have a couple more ideas to go off.
Also sorry for resurrecting this thread. I didn't realise it was a month old!

Thanks for the feedback, okay first. Yes I agree the Leaning Tree text could be different.Max wrote:It's not really as bad as you think at first glance. I think the problems are:

It's the correct size. Did you click the picture which links to the full thing? It's cut off in this post.
The hands should look natural.. It was hard to find a hand in that grasping pose..
The Carpe Omnia text is layered at least twice with a gradient and a stroke yeah.. I really like how it looks. I didn't want it to be too demanding of the cover.
I think it's clear Leaning Tree is the band because of its position at the top and that it's most clearly read.
And about the images.. well I have permission for the jungle background.. it's a uhh.. screenshot from a mission in Halo 3. Legal. As for the dirt.. yeah I stole some rock pattern and turned it brown into dirt. And the hand.. it was a tiny hand in a collage of poses and I overlayed it black so it's not really identifiable. As for the trees.. I found a tree and I tweaked it up pretty good in these two seen here

So, the band is called "leaning tree". Just to be helpful, i don't think it HAS to have a picture of a tree in it.
Honestly, i just hate that name. So ya, not your fault. Tell your friends to have a better band name.

Dammit Max, i read his post first and was gonna suggest the same thing!
But yeah, that would be sweet. Think about it, it's at night, and the signs on the curb. It'll be sweet!

Okay yeah I know, believe me I've thought through these things. Since this was for my art class though, I really wanted to actually make something.Jake-41 wrote:Dammit Max, i read his post first and was gonna suggest the same thing!

The idea is meh, reminds me of a bad Animal documentary in Africa. The look makes it seem like some 90's grunge band that never made it. Seize it all is cool. Not everyone will know what Carpe Omnia means so why no just say seize it all? Also, Carpe Omnia or just Seize It All sounds like a better band name than "leaning tree". I like the second and third draft of idea 1, i like them a lot just tweak the idea a bit more and it would be awesome.
