Spinner Interview with Deryck
Sum 41 Interview: SXSW 2010
How did your band form?
We started in tenth grade in high-school, we were the only ones in school who really played any instruments. I hated everyone in my school and they hated me so I radiated towards the musicians... we became Sum 41.
What are your musical influences?
I always believe everything you listen to always comes out. If there's bad music on I try to turn it off quick before it seeps into my subconscious. I'll be like, "OK, turn that off. I can't let it seep into my brain."
How did you come up with your band name?
Back in tenth grade, we just thought it sounded cool. I came up with the word Sum and it was the 41st day of summer when we decided to start a band.
What's your biggest vice?
I would probably say music -- it's been the cause of everything good and bad in my life. It's the one thing I couldn't quit.
What's in your festival survival kit?
My guitar and some booze -- that's it.
Who was your first celeb crush?
I guess it would have to be my ex-wife [Avril Lavigne].
What's your musical guilty pleasure?
I wouldn't call it guilty, but unexpected: I'm probably one of the biggest Frank Sinatra fans. I listen to him all day. I just got a new car, but in my old car I had satellite radio and there was an all-Sinatra station called Seriously Sinatra. I'd listen to it all the time.
Beatles or Stones?
Well, those are the other two that take up the rest of my day. Now, for the past few years, I've been listening more to the Stones but I spent a good twenty years listening to the Beatles.
What's the craziest thing you've seen or experienced while on tour?
I'd say being in the Congo and about to be killed. We were in a war and had to run from AK-47s. We were bombed and shot at and made it out alive.

Same questions and answers that have been said a million times.
Not a very creative interviewer.

I was going to say that, but I'm not popular enough to have an opinion.Jake-41 wrote:Same questions and answers that have been said a million times.

Re: Spinner Interview with Deryck
I expected to have more questions about whats going with the band now and the new album... but to be honest, I bet that even if it was about the new album we would've get the same questions and the same answers. Those questions were still boring and unoriginal though

It's looks like these are simple, already made questions. Seriously, ask these to any band and not one wouldn't have an answer for them.

Re: Spinner Interview with Deryck
Yeah, they must have a list of stock questions to ask any musician. Unless you're closely following all the bands, it would be hard to find original questions to ask every time. Unless your approach involves asking questions unrelated to music.

Not really. . I could make stock questions that surround a band that has a new album coming out. These are questions that are not good enough for a band that's been around for longer than 5 years.Jeremy Kill wrote:Yeah, they must have a list of stock questions to ask any musician. Re: Spinner Interview with Deryck
They probably don't even know Sum 41 has a new album coming out or they didn't check to see. That's probably why the questions have nothing to with a new album.Jake-41 wrote:Not really. .
