Making a Deryck replica...

Post by R. »

Like Jeremy, I wanted to also make a replica guitar, however, low budget version :glad:

So, my first step, I got this guitar:
http://www.squierguitars.com/products/s ... 0327502506

But since nothing seems to ship anything made by Fender to Canada, my local music store ordered it in, and I finally got it today, after two weeks of waiting.

Here's some pics:

Sorry if the pics are blurry, my camera's been out of focus lately.

So, now for questions:

1) Can you simply like tuck the base of the knobs underneath, so I don't have to re solder everything when-or if-I want to switch back.

2) For the custom pickguard on warmoth,
i) Would the pickups on this guitar be Gibson sized humbuckers?
ii) Would the controls be:
Control 1: None
Control 2: Volume 2
Control 3: Tone
Control 4: None
And use the tone hole to put the input jack?
iii) Would this version have a tele neck pocket, since it doesn't have a srat shaped neck?

3) Can I also just tuck the toggle hole underneath?

Answers plz

Do you want to do the Fender '72 Telecaster Deluxe?
Image
(this)

1.) Definitely yes, but I think the place in the hole isn't big enough. If you do it, you should ducktape them to the body. (I think soldering is better...)

2.) I don't think, that Warmoth has plain (without pot and swithc holes) Tele Dlx pickguard. If you want this:http://www.warmoth.com/Pickguard/TeleDe ... guard.aspx, you can use the original pickguard.
i) They must have the same size as Gibsons.
ii) Deryck's Tele Dlx has just one volume control.
And yes, you should use the lower left hole (if the guitar is standing) for the jack socket. (Maybe you should make the hole a bit bigger.) BUT don't forget to leave the original socket IN.

iii) I think yes. If you want to know it, measure it OR ask Fender. I think they can answer it.

3.) Same as 1.)

And about the pickups and wiring:
If you want do an EXACT copy, you need a Tele Dlx neck pickup and a Seymour Duncan SH-4 bridge pickup (90%...).
There 4 ways to wire it up:
a) The bridge PU is wired, the neck not (I think that's Deryck's)
b) The neck PU is wired, the bridge not.
c) The two pickups are wired parallel.
d) The two pickups are wired series.

Woah, thanks for the large answer..

So, why would Deryck's neck pickup not be wired?

I'm not going for exact-exact...the Fender tele deluxe pickup is around 99 dollars so...

I'll try asking fender, but I just noticed the fretboard goes longer on mine so it must be the tele pocket.

Becouse he uses in every guitars (as far as I know, maybe he uses some Rio Grande pickups) Sedymour Duncan SH-4's... If there is the SH-4 wired, I don't think the Fender Wide Range Humbucker is wired, too. That's just my theory, the real answer nows just Deryck:)

I'll help if I can. (I'm the f*ckin SUM41 gear guy xD). Really, that's my job:)

So you can keep the Squier (Duncan Designed) neck pickup. You need just a vintage Large ‘60s Style Headstock. But for a quite exact looking and sounding Deryck Whibley Tele Dlx Copy would be the stock headstock good, too.
Plss, if you do it, send me a few pics. Thx.
(Yes, the Fender Dlx Pups are too expensive, and for nothing...)
Got a no-string guitar, got a SUNN Beta head, I'm a rock and roll star,
I ain't no musician, some things are stranger than fishin'!

I just did it because I wanted his signature guitar when it was about to come out, but then when I saw how crappy it was, I decided to make a replica.

It's actually not bad, the JB is a great pickup. It's just a n00b guitar because of the one knob, haha.

well yeah i agree with you there. i made the mistake of buying one for the hell of it, and now i cant get rid of it!(i have better guitars around too..)

trust me, id leave the neck pickup wired and keep the tone and volume knobs, you will get more than just derycks tone that way.

What do you mean "Can't get rid of it"?

And I guess it will have to hold off for a while, Warmoth is being stupid...

I need the Tele Neck Pocket, and it's giving me the price of the Strat Neck Pocket...

I guess I'll just have to wait and see, I e-mailed them.
