On September 3, 1982, one of the greatest musicians of our age came into this world. Andrew Ross McMahon was born in Concord, Massachusetts. When he was 8 years old, he moved to Bexley, Ohio where he became a legend, playing piano solos before he could even read music. He moved to Orange County, California in 1995 where he started his first band, “Left Here”, with two of his future Something Corporate band mates, Kevin Page and Brian Ireland. The band’s time was short, even though they won a battle of the bands, they soon broke up. It was about one year later, in 1998, that Andrew started the band, Something Corporate, at the age of 15. The band played together and wrote songs for about two years, when they released their self-released demo album, Ready… Break, which got them a deal with the major indie label, Drive-Thru Records. After SoCo released their EP Audioboxer on Drive-Thru records, they were noticed by MCA Records. MCA then picked up the band and released their next full-length album, Leaving Through The Window. This album is really what put Andrew and Something Corporate on the map, it was number 101 on the US charts, and set them up for their final full-length album to be released at this point, North, which reached number 24 on the US charts. This was about the time when Andrew recorded a song by himself titled, Locked Doors. Andrew felt that this song was nothing like any of the other Something Corporate songs he’d written, so he decided if the song would ever be released; it would be on a solo project. This project was called, Jack’s Mannequin. Andrew thought that this idea wouldn’t really be possible until the Summer of 2004, when he and his band mates decided to take some time off. Over the next couple of months, Andrew began writing and recording new songs for Jack’s Mannequin with Jim Wirt who recorded bass and guitar parts, while Andrew did vocals and piano. Soon the duo added two more musicians, Bobby “Raw” Anderson, and Tommy Lee. Andrew and his new band, which now consisted of, Bobby Raw, Jon Sullivan, Jaques Brautbar, and Jay McMillan, played their first show in Molly Malone’s Irish Pub in March, 2005. Over the next year or so, Andrew spent all of his time promoting the band’s debut album, Everything In Transit. However, tragedy struck for Andrew on May 26th, 2005, which was exactly three months before the release of their album. Andrew had a case of laryngitis that just wouldn’t go away. After a trip to the doctor, he was rushed to the hospital where he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The doctors told Andrew that since it was caught so early, he had a good chance for a full recovery. However, the road ahead for Andrew was not an easy one. Andrew worked extremely hard over the next two months to beat his leukemia. On August 22nd, two very big events took place in his life, the first is that this was the day Jack’s Mannequin’s debut album, Everything In Transit, was released. The second, is that this was the day he received a stem cell transplant from his sister, Katie. As a thank-you for doing such an amazing thing for him, Andrew wrote the song, Katie, for her which was played live in 2007 at a Jack’s Mannequin concert. Throughout his whole recovery process, Andrew recorded a documentary entitled, Dear Jack, which is the name of a song that he wrote for one of his friends whose brother died of leukemia when he was seven years old. The name of this song is also where the “Jack’s” part of Jack’s Mannequin comes from. On July 9th, 2006 Andrew announced to the crowd at his concert that, that would be the last night he had to take his cancer medication. So, has been touring with Jack’s Mannequin for over three years, almost non-stop. The band has been recording their follow-up to Everything In Transit, The Glass Passenger, which will be released on September 30th, 2008. Andrew released a four song EP titled, The Ghost Overground EP, which featured two tracks from the upcoming album, as well as two live tracks. The EP featured the first single from The Glass Passenger, The Resolution, as well as Bloodshot. I think it is safe to say that everything Andrew touches turns to gold, and The Glass Passenger will be no different. Andrew McMahon has led a tough life, and still has a long way to go, hopefully he will keep making music as long as he possibly can, I know I’ll keep listening to it as long as he’s making it.
